THE WALKING DEAD: Michael Cudlitz Says AMC Series Went "Too Far" With Brutal Deaths Of Abraham And Glenn

The Walking Dead alum Michael Cudlitz has reflected on the violent deaths of Abraham and Glenn, a sequence which many feel was actually the beginning of the end for the AMC show's ratings dominance...

Believe it or not, it's been four years since The Walking Dead featured the brutal and graphic murders of fan-favourite characters Abraham and Glenn at the hands of Negan. While Glenn's demise was true to the source material, Abraham's was a genuine shock, and despite it all being very comic accurate, it alienated a lot of viewers and led to a sudden, and continued, drop in ratings.

During a recent appearance on the Talk Dead to Me podcast (via Huffington Post), Abraham actor Michael Cudlitz shared his thoughts on the way the deaths of both characters were handled.

"I always think it was a bridge too far, personally. I thought it was too much," he explained. "Either one of us should have lived a little bit longer because I think it was, people were very affected by it. They said, ‘Oh, my gosh, it was the most graphic brutal deaths. It was murder porn.’ All this stuff."

"The fact that I think you loved Abraham and Glenn so much as an audience, that’s what makes it more brutal. And you sort of think, ‘Oh, OK. Oh, my gosh. It was Abraham. We’re sad that it was Abraham, but thank God it wasn’t Glenn.’ And, ‘OK. Oh, my gosh. OK.’ And, ‘Oh, my God. It’s Glenn, too! What are you doing to me?’ I think it’s the one-two punch that was maybe a little too much."

"I think you want to start the season with a little bit more of a hug than a punch to the face or throat," Cudlitz concluded, pointing out what many fans have argued is a major issue with the AMC series.

Were these brutal death scenes the straw that broke the camel's back for you as well?

I hated Glenn so much.

With all the characters who have been killed, is there even anyone left people care about. Havent watched this in years, but from what ive heard most of the best characters are gone and lot of them were killed off without input from actors and they usually find out they are dying when they read the script

@dracula - I watched it most of the latest season just to see where they were heading.

When they introduced Zach McGowan as a character i kinda got interested again since i really liked his Charles Vane on Black Flag.

They killed his character in the second episode he was in. That was the last episode i watched. It was time to move on.

I was out long before this happened, but the last chance of me ever returning and catching up likely died with Glenn.

Honestly that was one of the best episodes of the series to me. The deaths were rough to watch of course but I thought it was handled well.

Not an episode I'll revisit often, but it was a pretty great introduction to Negan.

Season 7 overall could've been better though

I think he over estimates how people cared about Abraham

@originalmrphil - hahahahaha and really his death was more muted than Glenn’s. Now that really was a bridge too far. If I know a couple women including my wife that quit tuning in at that point, then I’m sure that’s a drop in the bucket.

Ol Cudlitz wanted to live a bit longer is all. Can’t blame em. Can’t even blame him for his denial, it’s a Hollywood thing, rose tinted glasses for your characters

Nah not too far at all. The season 7 premier was one of the best of the shows run. Maybe the best.

I stopped watching in season 2 so I didn't really care for the characters, and in turn I actually don't think they went too far. If anything, I made me like Negan even more (even if I don't watch TWD)

@MalseMarcel - You really should try it again. S1 was kind of meh, but the end of S2 to S6 is just incredible

Really didn't like how they treated the actor that played Carl. One the highlights of season 7 & half of season 8-was the Negan and Carl relationship. Though I left the series as soon as Andrew Lincoln left.

@ATrueHero1987 - I’ve only seen the rest of S9, but you should give it a watch. It was one of my fav seasons of the show, even without Rick

@ATrueHero1987 - Yup. That was the bridge too far. He was supposed to be the John Connor of the series and they just tossed him aside. Then again, they've done that to John too.

Either one of us should have lived a little bit longer

Abraham did live a little bit longer, though.

@Nightwing1015 - Abraham dies earlier in the books than where he did in the show.

I think its kinda funny when this show came out and everyone was praising it because "anyone can die at any point" yet now its like "why'd you kill my fav character"

I always hated how so many people freaked out over the death of Glenn and Abraham. You’re watching a show about [frick]ING ZOMBIES. While I hate what AMC turned this show into (I’ve stopped watching a few years back) - I applaud them for this episode. It’s only a shame the general public were whiney bitches so they had to issue an apology.

Lol unreal.

I think it was the begin of the decline but not because it was too far but because they peaked. It was really intense and then following that it just lost steam. You needed it to go at a million miles per hour until Negan got taken but instead it just went on and on with little consequence. It was a pacing and writing issue not a violence issue.

I think it was a pretty effective way to do it. People were expecting Glenn's death because of the comics so killing Abraham threw in a major curve ball that made Glenn's death actually surprising again with both also being emotional in their own right.

Having said that... I haven't watched Walking Dead in years. Quality really started going downhill after that, storylines felt stretched out way too thin and rarely picked back up. Think I finished the season where Carl died then I kinda called it quits. Early seasons were stellar though.

@AC1 - Its called subverting your audience's expectation and it seems to be a pretty bad storytelling technique.

@Deagle - "subverting an audiences expectations" isn't a bad storytelling technique - it's just a fancy way of saying "surprising the audience"

As with all things, it's all about execution.

I get what he means because it did shock me and upset me, I didn't even like Negan in the comics so JDM being the one in charge of portraying only helped me in digesting his scenes a bit. But seeing the whole thing play out was tough and made me hate Negan even more.

But from an objective POV, it was a nice twist that one just couldn't see coming. I give them that.
