THE WALKING DEAD Producer Explains When The RICK GRIMES Movies Shifted To Being A TV Series Instead

The Walking Dead producer and writer Greg Nicotero has addressed the decision for the planned Rick Grimes trilogy to become a TV series instead, explaining that there were concerns it might never happen.

The Walking Dead arguably outstayed its welcome, with the recent season 11 finale serving as what many felt was a long overdue conclusion to the AMC series. The biggest issue for many fans, of course, was the fact the series no longer felt the same once Rick Grimes actor Andrew Lincoln left.

Looking ahead, the franchise is far from over because a number of spin-off TV shows are in development - joining the ones we already have - with a focus on characters like Daryl, Maggie and Negan, along with Rick and Michonne. In the case of the latter, the original plan was for Lincoln and Danai Gurira to star in a trilogy of movies, an incredibly ambitious idea.

It was also one with a lot of risks (primarily in terms of box office success), especially as interest in the franchise has waned. That might explain why the movies were scrapped for a limited series finally revealing what became of Rick and detailing Michonne's journey to reunite with him.

Discussing the project on the Talking Strange podcast (via FearHQ.com), The Walking Dead producer and director Greg Nicotero explained, "Several iterations of the [movie] script flew around and it just ended up not coming to fruition. The idea of doing a Rick Grimes show popped up a year and a half ago probably."

"I don’t think anybody really thought it was gonna happen," he continued. "Lo’ and behold, as we get closer we start realizing, ‘Look, if we’re not going to do the movies then maybe there’s a show there.'"

While this spin-off could be a one-and-done story, there's always a chance it will run for multiple seasons, allowing The Walking Dead team even more time to explore this concept than one, two, or three movies ever could. Rick's story deserves a proper ending (especially as it differs greatly from what we saw in Robert Kirkman's comic books), so we are intrigued by this one.

AMC clearly still sees a lot of value in the franchise, anyway, and it won't be shambling off into the distance anytime soon.

I'm not disappointed that it became a miniseries, but the fact that it became a miniseries run by Scott Gimple is what kills any excitement I had for it.

I'll still watch it to see what happens to Rick and what all of these vapid formulaic Civic Republic teases have been building to, but Gimple showrunning is basically what seals it. This is going to be the Obi Wan Kenobi of the Walking Dead shows. The one that should be a slam dunk on paper, but ultimately shits the bed.

The one I'm looking forward to the most is Dead City. Maggie and Negan's uneasy and uniquely conflicted dynamic will make for a great spin-off if they have a good script. I also like that it's set in New York City.

If you want to know why Scott Gimple showrunning is bad, he's the showrunner of The Walking Dead Season 7-8, Fear the Walking Dead Season 3 onwards, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, and Tales of the Walking Dead (alongside Channing Powell).

Pretty much everything he's been a showrunner of since The Walking Dead Season 7 has been a trainwreck. There's a direct correlation between him showrunning and the shows getting panned.

@Darkknight2149 - I remember when Fear was actually good, then Gimple came along and [frick]ed it all up.

@Darkknight2149 - "The Walking Dead arguably outstayed its welcome"

This is truth, i think it should have ended around the time they brought Negan in.

The drop in the quality was quite obvious, but it was more the direction and the tone becoming to much of a soap opera.

Fear, i actually quite enjoyed after they swtiched it up in season 4 and brought Morgan over and also getting rid of most of the original cast.

I think after the Rick and Michonne show they should just stop.

@UniqNo - I will also say though, i stopped watched fear after they offed Dorie, so i'm not sure what state the show is in now.

@Darkknight2149 - I won't support this show with the people running it like Gimple. He's absolutely terrible at running this universe. I used to love Fear and TWD till he took over. It's been garbage across the universe ever since.

I'm glad the show has ended.

I'm curiously excited for Dead City.

Fear the Walking Dead got good for a bit, too.

@AmazingFILMporg - it was never going to be released in theaters. They were going to be TV movies.

How can something outstay its welcome when you don't even have to watch it? I liked it to the end so I really want to just say screw off to some people lol.

The Walking Dead became so irrelevant that in it's last year there was no character they could kill that would've brought interest back to the series. The finale came and went and seemed to go unnoticed.

It's easy, the SERIES FINALE drew less than 2m people. How many tickets is that, instead of going out on a high note they decided to run the franchise into the ground. Good riddance

The last season was such a disappointment, no major deaths and it went out with a whimper. I mean come on, only Rosita and two characters nobody cared about died? They should've given Gabriel his comic death, Aaron should've gotten Rick's comic death, one or all of the deaf sisters should've died, Carol or Ezekiel should've become walkers, Eugene shouldn't have made it to the end.

There were no stakes at the end.

@IronMan616 - As big of a TWD fan I am/was, I agree with all of this. I was totally expecting them to 86 several major people, hell one of them even said "everyone dies" or something like that, and the biggest one was Rosita?? On the series finale?? C'mon.
