Fox Wants A BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER "Revival" But Not Without Joss Whedon's Involvement

The Avengers director made a splash in '92 with the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie but it was the '97 TV series featuring Sarah Michelle Gellar in the titular role that made him a household name.

While attending the INTV Conference (Innovative TV Conference) in Jerusalem, Fox TV Group Chairman Gary Newman named Buffy the Vampire Slayer as a property the network is keenly interested in reviving. It's interesting that Newman chose the word "revival" as the discussion was focused on reboots.  However, regardless of whether Fox is angling for a reboot or revival, the network won't proceed without Joss Whedon's involvement.

Newman stated:

"I think if you look in our library, ‘Buffy’ is probably the most ripe show we have for bringing back.  It’s something we talk about frequently, and Joss Whedon is really one of the greatest creators we ever worked with. When Joss decides it’s time, we’ll do it. And until Joss decides it’s time, it won’t happen. […] Most times when we brought things back, it started with the creator coming into us and saying I’ve got another story I want to tell. It seems to me that if there isn’t a real sense of nostalgia, a passionate fan base demonstrating they still want it then I don’t really buy bringing these shows back.”

Speaking of Whedon, he might be free at the moment.  After two successful Avengers films, the box office blunder of Justice League, an embarrassing divorce scandal reportedly factored into Warner Bros. decision to remove Whedon as director of their Batgirl film. Whedon is said to be currently developing a World War II horror film but the current status of that project is anyone's guess. Perhaps a Buffy revival is exactly what Whedon needs to change the current trajectory of his career?

Bring back Buffy? I mean, i would probably watch. Haven't there been comics since the finale though? If those were to remain canon then tv viewers like myself would be awful behind.

@TheManWithoutFear - A ton of comics from Dark Horse. They've gone a lot further than where the show left off.

@TheManWithoutFear - A while back Joss said that if he ever does more Buffy on television, he would ignore the comics, it would be two different timelines

@TheManWithoutFear - I hated it the first time... I am not sure whedon has improved at all since the 90s.

Thats the hill you want to die on Fox?There are alot of talented directors(and more consistent than Joss) that could get the director's chair
dracula
dracula - 3/13/2018, 2:13 PM
@auditore - Its Joss's creation, a director did get a shot with the original Buffy movie, which by the way was made by a woman, and it was turned into a comedy. Really no matter what Joss needs to have some level of involvement. At least for the first year to get it off the ground before he allows someone else to take over fully

It's a claissc that I think should be left alone but there's an argument for a continuation of sorts. Not a reboot.

The Slayer is a mantle that is passed down every generation.

@BlackBeltJones - Yeah. Wouldn't be hard to set it in the same universe, just with a new set of Sunnydale "scoobys."

ICStoopedPeople - 3/13/2018, 1:57 PM
@BlackBeltJones - Wouldn't even have to kill off Buffy (I'd be against that outright) since they ended it with like 50 new slayers.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 3/13/2018, 2:01 PM
@MarkJulian - The Dark Horse comics were really good too and the mythology is deep enough.

I figure they'll go the Scooby route eventually, but the Slayer is meant to be a lone warrior. Buffy was the first to have a support system. I wonder if they'd consider that maybe.

@ICStoopedPeople - very true. Almost forgot.

@BlackBeltJones - At least they said they wont do it without Joss, so as long as he is on board im fine with anything, whether its a continuation or a reboot. A few years ago they were going to do a reboot movie at warner brother and Joss had no involvement

Buffy doesn't need a revival. I love the show, but there's no way it can be good. Plus there's no reason to assume Joss Whedon is as good as he once was.

@MasterMix - Well we will see how good Joss is at the moment soon, since he is returning to co write the Buffy Season 12 comic book

@dracula - I couldnt get into the Buffy continuation comics. They were to weird without a budget to hold the writers down. However, Angel:After the fall was good

That is thoughtful of them.

@NinnesMBC - True other reboots are getting made without any involvement from the creators

@dracula - Even more when you remember that it was Fox who canceled Firefly after just one Season too.

I always felt they should have spinoffs with previous slayers (pre-Buffy) set in different eras.

I think it's possible that they could bring back the orginal cast for a Season 8 (likley ignoring the continuity of the comics) but I think Spike and Angel have aged to far to have have them return as immortal vampires.

ICStoopedPeople - 3/13/2018, 1:59 PM
@StormXmen123 - Yeah, James Marsters was like -- 40 and looked 20. Now? He's definitely looking his age. Poor guy.

Boreanaz still looks surprisingly good.
dracula
dracula - 3/13/2018, 2:18 PM
@StormXmen123 - Dont think they would do a whole series based on 1 past slayer, but maybe each season could focus on a different slayer

Off-topic, previews of Flash. (Nothing of Black Lightning unfortunately)

And an interview with Candice Patton about the episode, what is coming and Iris seeming to resurrect her journalistic job after tonight.

"She's pretty eager to do a really good job. Also, you'll find out at the end of the episode that having these powers kind of reignites her real passion. She realizes that she doesn't want to be a superhero, but it reminds her of what she really wants to do, which is to be a reporter and a journalist.

Nice! So we're heading back into that?

I think so. We still have that newspaper to get to in 2024. This is the episode I think we see Iris remember that being a journalist is what she's really passionate about, in the same way that Barry is passionate about being a Speedster. I'm still curious to see how that will unfold and what it will look like, but I do think it's something that we are ready to explore again.

What else can you tell us about what's coming up?

What can I say that won't get me in trouble? [Laughs] I will say that Iris and the Mechanic (Kim Engelbrecht) have a pretty epic showdown. There is gonna be a really cool fight sequence between the two of us. I was really excited about that. I don't think we've ever seen two women without superpowers fight, like hand-to-hand combat. There are a lot of good battles coming up and we're coming to the end of trying to figure out how to take down DeVoe and using everything in our arsenal to do that.

We're so enjoying the fact this this villain isn't about speed or racing Barry.

Exactly. Yeah, it's all thought. We're pulling out all the stops. I won't give too much, but we're using anyone and everyone we can. That means anyone's up for grabs, even previous villains that we've seen on the show. We're using anyone we can to help us come up with an idea to defeat DeVoe. I'm actually reading Episode 21 now, and Iris is gonna be a big part of that, using her journalism to try and figure out what's the best plan of action to take down DeVoe."

Loved watching Buffy but never finished it.

Although if you want Joss to bring back one of his other shows, there might be one out that the fans have been waiting for............................

@dracula -

That's good, I only watched a couple of episodes (which I really enjoyed) after I started watching Castle with Fillion but know it has a massive fanbase who have been wanting more for a long time.

@dracula - too late. They cancelled it when it had barely started. One of the finest space sci-fi shows ever on TV. Only one I would say is superior is Battlestar Galactica.

Unfortunately now with Walsh and Book dead in Serenity (not to mention the Alliance was exposed for the creation of the reavers), it would be a very different show.

@SimplyAz - I think that’s the one thing Joss will absolutely never do which is sad but we got enough of an ending with Serenity. If he needs to go back to something it’s Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog because that ended on such a huge cliffhanger

@Ha1frican -

Okay that's a shame as there seems to be a huge Clamour for it.

I've never seen Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long, definitely need to check it out.

@SimplyAz - I’m pretty sure it’s free online. Keep in mind it’s very low budget and one of the first web series so the production value isn’t great but it’s very clever and a lot of fun
