Joss Whedon Passed on Buffy Reboot

Joss Whedon Passed on Buffy Reboot

There was a lot of outcry this past week after word came out that a Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie was going to be made without the involvement of creator Joss Whedon, but the Hollywood Report has posted a story claiming that Whedon was offered and passed on the chance to direct it.

Says THR, "According to studio insiders, he was approached last year after Buffy rightsholder Fran Rubel Kuzui and husband Kaz Kuzui began developing a remake with Vertigo. After being presented with the opportunity, Whedon decided he'd rather work on other projects (he's making Marvel Studios' The Avengers). Producers then began searching for a writer and late last year hired actress-turned-scribe Whit Anderson. The unknown Anderson, with only bit film appearances to her credit, came up with a take on the Buffy myth that was strong enough after a couple of drafts to lure Atlas, which partnered with Vertigo to set it up at a studio. Fox, distributor of the 1992 movie, had first crack, but passed, so Warners slid in, betting that Whedon or no Whedon, Buffy can still slay at the box office."

so he had the chance to do it before he got the avengers gig, and he passed it on, so i dont see how he can complain about it unless of course this source is BSin

I was under the impression that he turned the gig down; I think he just wanted to create some distance between him and the Buffyverse.

why would he want to go back to it, i mean he d probably have to recast several characters...i think he might hav enjoyed a reunion but i think they probably wanted some fresh blood for a reboot to promote this ala twilight. good he stayed away!

I think he was pissed because he didn't want the reboot to happen with or without him. And i agree with him.

way too early for a reboot of this series and WB is going to learn what Fox learned with their version.

Joss wanted a new Buffy movie, only if he could get all of the original cast back. Sarah Michelle Gellar single handedly shut that down, claiming she was happy enough with the way the TV series ended. Joss wasn't going to ever recast her, no matter what, so the Buffy movie idea died for him.

The studio did own the rights to the Buffy character and idea, and they did approach Joss about helming the reboot. His exact words were, "I think that's something I'm best not a part of." That was long before he was offered The Avengers.

I grant you, the Buffy-verse can't possibly be the same without Whedon and the original cast, but I still think SMG should've given back to the series that made her a superstar, as opposed to some of the s#!tacular movies she's done since Buffy went off the air.

whedon should only be focusing on the avengers and thats it, nothing else should matter, because if he gets the avengers wrong he would instantly become the most hated man on this site

@AsianAvenger if they had amber heard looking exactly like she is in that pic then i would go and watch the buffy reboot

i was never a great fan of buffy, i enjoyed the angel series much more

You can not make a Buffy movie without the original cast. It will be a epic failure.

Face it, they have the rights to make a Buffy movie; they're gona do it. If I understand it; their clam stems way back to the first movie. With that said; only characters from the origional film and or new, origonal characters can appear in the "reboot". No Willow, no Xander...so fans of the series should have nothing to worry about. If the Joss man is resigned to it, then so be it! At worst it will be a blip on the Buffy-verce.
