DOOM PATROL Will Be The Only DC Universe Series On HBO Max Reveals Content Chief

There's been a great deal of confusion over the decision to have Doom Patrol stream across both DC Universe and HBO Max, and Content Chief Kevin Reilly has today explained the thinking behind this...

Earlier this year, HBO Max Content Chief Kevin Reilly explained that WarnerMedia were still attempting to figure out how subscriptions between HBO Max and DC Universe would work. Both are owned by the same company, and there's concern that consumers will be paying for the same thing twice, especially after the announcement that Doom Patrol will stream on both.

Business Insider asked Reilly what that means for HBO Max and whether we can expect all the DCU shows to transition over to the new streaming platform as time passes.

"There have been extensive discussions around DCU because DC is such a valuable entity to us and the depth of fandom is so important. So we really want to figure out how we walk this line for fans where we have a deep fan engagement, which is why DCU was designed, and a broader fan engagement."

"That is evolving but there were high-end series that DCU produced that felt like, budgetarily, we could handle from a business model better, and bring along and service that swath of fans," he continued. "Doom Patrol" was a show we identified that had deep love for it and tucked right into our portfolio."

An HBO Max representative later reached out to the site to clarify that there are "no current plans for any other DCU show" to move to that platform, and it's likely WarnerMedia simply wanted something DC related on their new service as soon as possible, hence why Doom Patrol has moved.

@BlackBeltJones - I wasn't a big fan, problem I had with the show is that "Swamp Thing" isn't in it that much. His own personal quest of discovery about himself is just a side story. the main plot is about a murder mystery and nasty politics. It was too boring. Swamp Thing deserves a movie that can afford him to be the focus.

I thought Blue Devil and horror VFX were cool though.

@BlackBeltJones -
Connect the darkness from Swamp Thing with the Rising Darkness from Constantine and do a crossover.

IE: It's loved by fans and really cheap to produce.

But with Swamp Thing & Stargirl going to The CW the only DC Universe originals are Harley Quinn, Young Justice & Titans.
Good thing Harley Quinn & Young Justice are good shows otherwise I don't think anyone would care.

@kider - But Harley Quin is airing season 1 on Syfy and Titans is on Netflix outside the US. It's really only Young Justice that's exclusive to DC Universe. It's such a bizarre decision to have so many "exclusives" on different platforms.

@RyConn93 - I guess the shows must be too expensive and DC Universe doesn't make enough to support them on its own.
And Young Justice being the only exclusive makes sense actually seeing as it was one of the big selling points of the service.

That’s dumb! Just merge the two!

@JonAwesome - Yea its so weird WB has:
HBO max,
Boomerang,
DC Universe.

Why have 3 when you could have 1 with the biggest library of all services?

@kider - Its not hard to figure out whyy, if you have 3 seperate servives with their own exclusive content, you make more money.

This makes no sense. HBO Max's DC section is anemic right now, and the DCU is an insanely niche service. Share shows at the very least, JFC.

@tmp3 - The rub has to be the online comics. 99% of HBO Max subscribers would never read the comics if they were bundled, and it would probably be seen as "something they're forcing me to pay for" by some subscribers.

The live-action and cartoon content on DCU was always there to jumpstart and mainstream the comic side of the service. Super-exclusive super-targeted straight at comic fans, and potentially exploring a new direct engagement model with readers, as opposed to filtering through retailers and distributors.

It does make sense how they got to where they are. It's far from ideal, but there is this overlap in the venn diagram of content that comic fans will pay through the nose for and content that normies would like sprinkled onto their normie streaming archive. And smack in the middle of that diagram is apparently Doom Patrol.

@Spock0Clock

You’re right. As much as I want all of the DC Universe content under HBO MAX, probably won’t happen because of the comics portion of the DC Universe.

I had DCU for a year - think it was set to renew in April but I chose not to. Think I bought the year long subscription when I was drunk haha It was a cool service but I never even utilized the comics portion.

But they are always going to want a service where their subscribers could access those comics.

It sounds like he's saying Doom Patrol season 2 has a bigger budget though?

@tmp3 - That'd be great maybe Cyborg will look better? He never look believable to me.

Slightly unrelated, but HBO Max sucks in Canada... considering the fact it doesn’t EXIST. They’re putting the new shows (& Snyder Cut) on a shitty streaming service which only JUST let us stream in 1080p

kider - 5/27/2020, 6:36 AM
@DaHyro - I guess if you really wanted better quality couldn't you use a VPN to get HBO Max?

Splitting content between the two is probably going to hurt in the long run. Also HBO Max is kind of barren.

Again, it's the age of streaming services. Why would you kneecap one and not only halfway leverage that to benefit the other (and why even have 2 in the first place)?
