ARROW Star Stephen Amell Takes A Shot At John Cena Following Green Arrow Joke In Recent Season Finale

After Peacemaker's joke about Green Arrow went viral following the character's recent season one finale, Stephen Amell has hit back with a scathing response that takes aim at John Cena's wrestling ability.

A running theme throughout the first season of Peacemaker has been Christopher Smith revealing bizarre and disturbing "facts" about many of the DC Universe's greatest heroes.

The vast majority have been ridiculously tall tales, but there was a line in the finale that was supposedly true, as Smith claimed that the Star City superhero "goes to Brony conventions dressed as the back half of Twilight Sparkle with a four inches wide butthole drilled in the costume."

A fan on social media recently made Arrow star Stephen Amell aware of that joke at Oliver Queen's expense, and he wasted no time in hitting back at star John Cena. For context, the actor has stepped into the wrestling ring a few times for companies like WWE and Ring of Honor, and now stars in Heels, a Starz drama from Loki writer Michael Waldon set in the world of professional wrestling.

"Haven’t seen it," Amell said of Peacemaker. "Too busy showing Cena what professional wrestling should actually look like on TV." Shots fired, eh?

It's worth noting that Peacemaker's Green Arrow dig wasn't aimed at Amell's version of the character as the show takes place in the DC Extended Universe and not the Arrowverse. Still, the actor is bound to feel a sense of ownership over the Emerald Archer, and he's probably just having fun here.

So, Green Arrow vs. Peacemaker in season 2, anyone?

@rebellion - Well, I mean... it's not like Gunn / Cena (in character) were being mature to begin with. I can understand Amell feeling like he has some ownership over and protectiveness of the Green Arrow character after playing the part so long and prominently.

Even after he was out as Daredevil, Charlie Cox still clearly felt attached. If Tony Stark in Endgame had said "we need everyone to help save the world, but don't call up that gay weirdo in Hell's Kitchen", it'd be hard to not take that as aimed partially at Cox and his work.

I haven't watched Peacemaker, but I saw Gunn's Suicide Squad. I get that he's supposed to be a dick. But when you have the big movie / HBO characters taking potshots at CW-associated-material, it does feel like punching down. And since being a sexualized brony is basically the most nuclear insult that internet edgelords can weaponize, it's not like this was teasing in good fun.

(And I should be clearer that Gunn would have been the target of the reprisal if Amell was genuinely trying to start some shit about it. He chose instead to do some kayfabe stuff with Cena because no publicity is bad publicity.)

@Spock0Clock - I watched the finale last night finally and when Cena said this line I didn't laugh and I thought of Ameell and what he would think. It did seem mean-spirited and was totally unnecessary to the scene. It defiantly stood out in context of the story so I'm not surprised this is being discussed now.

@rebellion - Relax, he's just joking. No need to take it seriously.

I don't care about wrestling at all. Cena is a much better actor than Amell though.

Peacemaker is an amazing show
Arrow, not so much

@eGGtheGreat - Cena is the weakest part of his own show, but sure

Clearly just having fun. But it's a weak jab, cause Cena played his WWE role so darn well. He was a blast to watch.

I wouldn't hate Stephen Amell back as Green Arrow in a film or TV show. But you'd really need to completely re-do the character. But seeing as Cox is back as DD, it wouldn't be terrible to do that with GA

Arrow should not waste his time with a Fruity pebble.

This is funny… he’s taking a jab at Cena, who in my opinion has made himself one of the most household names in WWE, even as far to go as more popular than Hulk Hogan now.

Come on man, you may as well take a jab at Joaquin Phoenix and tell him you’re showing him what “real acting looks like” while you’re at it.

Wouldn't it make more sense to go after Gunn rather than Cena? And even then he's taking this too seriously - it was a joke.

It's pretty sad how so many of you think this is a jab. Cena and Amell are friends. Amell plays a HEEL in his show about wrestling.

Y'all need to chill.

Even though its fake Cena would completely destroy Amell in the squared circle.

Pretty good retort there, imo. Amell clearly isn't being serious and is just having some fun.

I enjoyed Peacemaker's first season quite a bit, even though it had flaws, and ended up binging the show in a couple days. Arrow's first season was more enjoyable and better though.

That's clearly a joke. Can't wait for season 2. Good to see Amell doing well post Arrow.
