PEACEMAKER: DC Studios Boss James Gunn Confirms He's In The Process Of Writing Season 2

DC Studios' James Gunn has confirmed he's in the process of writing Peacemaker season 2, suggesting the series could return - as part of the new DCU - sooner than most of us anticipated. Check it out...

The first season of Peacemaker premiered on HBO Max last January to positive reviews and, we're assuming, solid viewership numbers. It didn't take too long for the show to be renewed, anyway, though there was no real mention of The Suicide Squad spin-off during DC Studios' "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters" slate reveal.

Instead, plans for yet another spin-off were confirmed with Waller one of the projects set to kick off a new era of storytelling as part of the DCU. With Viola Davis' Amanda Waller put front and centre, "Team Peacemaker" is expected to appear, but there's been no mention of John Cena's Christopher Smith.

A fan recently commented on the Instagram post below to demand news about Peacemaker season 2 to which DC Studios co-CEO and showrunner James Gunn responded, "Writing it now."

For the most part, plans for more episodes have been welcomed by fans. There's been some unhappiness, of course, primarily because this is DCEU actor/project Gunn has ties to that's being brought into this world (while the likes of Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot have been shelved). Still, if you've watched Peacemaker, we're you'll understand why the studio boss and filmmaker wants to continue telling this character's story.

Peacemaker ended with Smith exposing Waller's evil ways to the world, likely meaning her show will serve as a season 1.5, of sorts. It's hard to say how the former Task Force X member will factor into the new DCU, though Waller could offer at least a few clues in that respect.

"Peacemaker quickly establishes itself as essential viewing for fans of The Suicide Squad," we said in our season 1 review"but it's a career-best performance from John Cena and the greatest opening credits of all time that will make sure you want to come back each week."

Peacemaker follows the explosive escapades of the character that John Cena reprises in the aftermath of Gunn's 2021 film The Suicide Squad - a compellingly vainglorious man who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it.

The cast includes John Cena, Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Jennifer Holland, Chukwudi Iwuji, Steve Agee, and Robert Patrick.

The series was renewed for a second season last February but doesn't have a confirmed release date (we're not expecting to see it for at least another two or three years). The first eight episodes of Peacemaker are currently streaming on Max.

Are you excited about Peacemaker season 2?

I'm only half-joking, btw. I legit can't tell what's supposed to be canon in Gunn's DCU any more...

Cool , I thought the first season was solid so I’m interested to see what happens next with Chris Smith & Co.

Also , I wonder if we’ll keep the intro or have a new one?.

See regularmovieguy? TSS and Peacemaker will be hard canon, despite all of James Gunn's comments about how canon starts with CC/SL.

What he means is, that TSS and Peacemaker Season 1 are hard canon, lol. That's what he actually meant.

Don't watch the mouth, watch the hands.

@ObserverIO - nowhere did he say TSS and Peacemaker season 1 are hard cannon. He said waller, Peacemaker, Vigilante are in the DCU played by the same actors as their DCEU counterparts. Keep up!

I’m interested to see how we see Peacemaker dealing with “ the ghost” of his dad “haunting” him now due to his guilt of killing him and overall trauma.

It’s an idea from the comics actually so it was cool to see Gunn bring it onto the screen his own way.

@TheVisionary25 - I’m more interested to see how Gunn juggles this, Superman, and everything else DCU related. I’d have thought he’d at least step down from the writing duties and just produce… hope he doesn’t get stretched too far too thin!

@AmazingFILMporg

My buds and I really enjoyed it. Probably the best sequel next to Saw 2. Not perfect but it's fun and for a Saw movie it's better than it should be.

Excited to watch it on VOD - make sure to stay for the mid-credit scene. We didn't and I was pissed when I watched it later on my phone. Think we're seeing The Creator tomorrow which I'm not hyped for but I'm hoping it surprises me. Didn't love the trailers for it.

That's great to hear💪

Hard to believe it's the same director that made saw 3D😑...

One of the worst horror movies I've seen in theaters so this is a great redemption story for his career and the franchise.

I really hope they keep the momentum going. Take your time. None of this once a year saw film.🤞

I had no idea it was the same director - but ya, they did a really good job. Not sure how many prequels they can do though...really the only problem I see with making more.

Tobin Bell is impossible to replace, imo.

They really need to find a true successor. Bell won't be alive forever. Maybe do a whole film with his new official apprentice but you have to cast someone perfect.

I saw both movies.

Saw X surprised the heck out of me. So much better than I expected. It will reinvigorate the franchise. I am not a huge fan of most of the saw movies, but this may be the best along with the first one. I give it a B+.

Creator was okay. It was beautiful & had some great visuals throughout, but the movie part was kind of generic & forgettable. The kid was great. I would give it a B- or C+.

Both are worth a watch on the biggest screen possible.

This show had some moments and character work that REALLY popped. Then it was often undercut by childish, bottom the barrel toilet humor. Which, you hope the DCU as a whole doesn’t suffer from.

@GhostDog - Gunn’s humor I have just come to accept is hit or miss for me but the guy can do heart & character dynamics well.

I do hope the more irrevent & juvenile humor we see in the Guardians films aswell as his DC work isn’t in Superman though since that doesn’t fit the character.

Cautiously optimistic , he’s cooking with the casting so far imo.

It had some great moments and some terrible James Gunn 13 year old cringe level jokes in it.

Let's hope he leaves all of that d!ck joke dance off Thor 4 fat Zeus level of trash humor out of Superman Legacy.

There is no way Peacemaker was the hit that WB is making it out to be. If it were then it would not be three years from season 1 to the next season (I Guess season 1A). There is a reason why they don't release streaming numbers. I bet it did about as well as the CW shows.

I know I am in the minority here, but suicide squad 2 was total dogshit and the peacemaker I saw there was trash. I have not seen the standalone episodes and won't, I had to force myself to finished sq2. With all he has to restore the dcu, you'd think he would spend time building up the trinity and not a tertiary character. This is very disappointing 😞 😔 😕 😒 😑.

Hope the DCU doesn’t suffer bc of it

Keeping low expectations unfortunately

Been let down too much by the DCEU in the past

We’ll see, fingers crossed

The only project that I feel Gunn can let out his true, actual creative colors if you all know what I mean.

This 2nd Season might be coming around 2026 or 2027. Either way it's quite a long time gap, way too much IMO.

Currently I don't feel that enthusiastic to see more, but out of obligation and being a completionist I'll tune in just in case.

Regardless he still won't escape the finger pointing of how he let got half of the DCEU cast, namely Cavill, while keeping some specific ones as well as John freaking Cena staying around after that DCEU embedded Season 1. Who'd knew...

I'm more excited for this than any other promised hero show or movie. I even came up with a plot

Peacemaker: Season 2

Waller must go into hiding after being outed at the end of season 1 and fears her daughter is a victim of something nefarious. Although underground, she uses what connections she still has to "rescue" her daughter and have the others killed.

Meanwhile, a costumed racist calling himself Der Fledermaus reestablishes himself in order to recruit like-minded villains to overthrow the US government as the US is feeling stronger than ever having found flagship heroes in P&V.

Peacemaker, Eagly, Vigilante, Adebayo, Harcourt, and Economos gather criminals from Belle Reve, aided by Marlene the lunch lady, to stop Der Fledermaus.

Secretly, Peacemaker is battling through arguments with his dead father who is credited as The Gentleman Ghost.

Peacemaker's team, L.A.W. (Living Assault Weapons)

Adebayo- When she is finally "rescued" she has an emotional confrontation with her mother that finally sets her apart from Waller and it's cemented when she requests from the UN to create Project Peacemaker with her as the director.

Harcourt- The unofficial leader of the group becomes closer to Peacemaker until she is haunted by her past when she runs into her old flame, Lenny "Crusher" Crock who calls her Tigress. She is forced to reveal her past to the team.

Economos- becomes something of a handler to the misfits and, in doing so, matures over the season and is taken seriously midway and asserts himself considerably.

Vigilante- The self-appointed second-in-command tragically dies in the end. Even Eagly cries.

Eagly- He is the one Peacemaker appoints as number 2.

Thorn- *if CW insisted on doing more DC properties, I'd suggest an Alan Scott/Sentinel show where Thorn would play an intricate part as a love interest of sorts, a parliament of the green, a daughter to Rupert Thorne, a descendant of Blackbriar Thorn(e), and a character with whom we empathize greatly. Here, in Peacemaker, she's just nuts. Of course, this show will laugh and cry with these characters with the same balance of season 1. In the end of PM season 2, Thorn decides to go to a facility where she can seek therapy for her disorder.

Catman- has an obsession to be perfect and fights his eating disorder. A prominent character in the Sentinel show mentioned above where he goes from villain to anti-hero and shocks viewers early on as it's revealed he is the absentee brother to a main character in Sentinel's team, Lady Blackhawk. In the end of PM season 2, Catman opts to travel the world and create animal safety awareness.

Giganta- Her growth (and size reduction) is uncontrollable leading to many gags but also developing a softer side to her as we see her self esteem go from worse to better. In the end of PM season 2, she falls in love with Economos and the 2 leave all of this behind.

Kite Man- Have kite, is man; hell yeah! At least, he seems as one dimensional as this. Kite Man is one of the very few costumed criminals to never try and escape; this is one major reason why our returning heroes felt he could be trusted. He never tried to escape because he was finally trying to set the example for his son and be the father he never was. PM bonds with KM as opposite sides of similar tragedy. KM, in the end, is redeemed in the eyes of his son.

Plastic Man- The most together of the team. He picks on the others and is a constant thief. He's the one we're supposed to love the most if no one else steals the show. By the end, he figures he'll give heroism a go.

The Cavalier- More Zorro than a large-brimmed hat-wearing "Arrrr yee matey" type. He's oddly charming and the others are confused by how well he wins them over. In the end, he fades away and the others are left to think about just how cool he was.

Wonder Twins- The absolute outcasts. Just completely dump on them until it's realized at the end that everything we thought was incorrect and they turn out to be powerful and far less strange.

Axis of AmeriKKKa

After the apparent death of Chris' brother, Keith Smith, a group was formed without the knowledge of the White Dragon because many thought his affection for Keith was a weakness. Members were able to save young Keith and raised him without nurture, affection, and bonds.

Der Fledermaus- Only spotted a few times as a youth, having to avoid being recruited, and found out, by White Dragon, he is, in fact, Keith. This is a big reveal late in the season.

Count Vertigo- Vertigo has aligned himself with the take-over because he has been promised that his country, under his thumb, will gain power within this New World Order. (King Snake, who could be used similarly, like several Batman characters, is withheld as I assume they will, or could, be used in with Batman properties).

Lady Vic- The nobility of Vic is just as important to the premise as Vertigo's. The 2 are snobbish aristocrats who see themselves as better than the others and aren't Nazi sympathizers as much as they are self serving. Diplomatic immunity saves both of them by the end.

Cheshire- Strangely, she has vowed to help Fledermaus. As the only non-white member, she isn't treated well but claims to believe in the cause and wishes to reap the benefits. The late teens-to young adult, in truth, is the bastard child of Keith as a result of the rape and, later, murder, of her mother. She was thought to have been killed as well but her life was mysteriously spared by the assassin. Her mission is to kill her father when the time is right which she does so in the end with begrudging permission from Peacemaker. Her relation to Fledermaus also means she is the niece of Peacemaker. She needs the mask from the cartoons; I love that mask.

Everyman- He is the shape-shifting plot device that will take the form of the president and usher in the NWO on Fledermaus' orders. For this purpose, his ability is what sells his presence. In the end, he escapes incognito after realizing he was being used and regarded as nothing more than a weapon.

Baron Blitzkrieg- another member on whom experiments were performed, only with Baron, it was a physical alteration versus the mental alteration Fledermaus underwent. He's quite happy with his position in the organization and is a dutiful agent. He is, by far, the most underdeveloped character. In the end, he is killed by Giganta, who grows at will.

Killer Wasp- a one-off villain in my proposed Sentinel show that helps dive deeper into another team member, though, here, as the childhood friend of Fledermaus; he is to Fledermaus what Vigilante is to Smith. He killed his father and several other "boomers" at the behest of Fledermaus when they resisted his leader's bloody takeover. In the end, he and Vigilante kill each other in a last ditch effort by Vig to save Eagly.

Double Dare- 2 seductive circus performers who find themselves unwavering in their attraction to Fledermaus. It's the most blatant "wet-dream" of boys because it's so wrong and should lean into uncomfortably aggravating that it airs. The real hate these two conjure should melt into the characters. It's everything wrong with the way women are treated, seen, and cast, to the point where their personalities are intentionally not defined at all. In the end, they are apprehended.

Waller's Checkmate team is not a goof troop of hacks.

Scandal Savage- Replacing Shiva because Shiva needs to be in the DCGunnU and taken seriously, Savage takes on the Femme Fatale leader role.

The Hook- Replacing David Cain because he should be in any DCGU movie that introduces Shiva and/or Cassandra, Hook is such a cool character that fits the serious side of the very fun Peacemaker show and receives the proper introduction here.

Red Arrow- As much as I love the first 2 or 3 seasons of Young Justice, the absolute 3 best things to come from it were Cheshire, the genetic Harper "brothers", and Sportsmaster. If there's no room for a movie starring Roy Harper (I want that as much as I want an Icon movie and more than I want another Superman or Batman), then he deserves some love. He's definitely the one we love on this team. Also, if I'm going to have Cheshire, I think Red Arrow is going to add something even more to that story and prove he's one of the best (anti) heroes on the show. Cheshire and Red will spark quickly and, in the end, run off together.

Red X- Having never watched Teen Titans, I found out about Red X much later and did some digging on who I thought it was. I determined it was most likely Shrike, while discrediting several others. Using the character here, I tied it to Peacemaker season 1. Stay with me; we know that the Peacemaker Judomaster is very different from the comics so (and this is a big) what if that Judomaster is Tiger, the child sidekick to Rip, the original Judomaster (of whom we have not met within the series). What if Tiger killed Rip after being manipulated by the butterflies and later took on the Judomaster name? Maybe this new Judomaster, the one we now know, was named Jimmy Leong (who, in the comics, was the name of Stuff, the Chinatown Kid, who made his first appearance as a sidekick to {the original} Vigilante {in 1942}. Jimmy, as of season 2, is on a voyage in the Himalayas, throughout the season, eating his Cheetos and battling his own antagonists (sort of a self-discovery pun on Bruce Wayne).

Therefore, this leaves a void and his brother, Victor Leong (who, in the comics, became the second Chinatown Kid), takes the Red X moniker and works voluntarily for Waller in order to kill Peacemaker and Vigilante because Victor blames the disappearance and/or mental breakdown of Jimmy on the duo (and superheroes in general).

Lock-up- A fun character to oppose and conflict with everyone and taking on that enforcer role Katanna and Peacemaker took.

Bolt- I'm surprised he wasn't already a part of the DCEU Suicide Squad. That being said, he was lumped in, along with PM , in the 2021 comics and that's even more of a reason to have him. He's a deadly character that's not well known, but should be soon. He seems to lay low in the hierarchy of the team but gets down and dirty when the action begins.

Copperhead- The slithery contortionist is the black sheep of the group, creeping the others out at every turn.

Black Spider- He's an elite assassin with incredible hand-to-hand combat and marksmanship skills with only one small problem; he's an unabashed Peacemaker fanboy.

Sportsmaster- I'm not going to give up on shoehorning him into any DC property I can imagine until I see what YJ gave us. In my *yawn~here we go again* CW Sentinel pitch he understandably plays a large part (as an original enemy to Scott) even taking on a version of the Made of Wood Killer after putting an end to a copycat Sportsmaster. He's the guy that thinks he should run the team and he's the guy that thinks he has Peacemaker's number. Ironically, he is a perfect match for Smith, who is more akin to John McClane than Bruce Wayne. Add to all of that, his history with Emilia "Tigress" Harcourt, and he should be very interesting.

Cannon- Years ago, Henry Cannon was quickly beaten by Peacemaker and Vigalante and apprehended thereafter. While imprisoned, he dedicated himself to perfecting his prowess (akin to Cape Fear) so that he can one day kill the duo. By Waller, he has been given that chance. He has a one-track mind until we learn that, also imprisoned, is his soulmate to whom he intends to return after his goal is completed, adding another layer to the assassin.
