SUPERGIRL Star Melissa Benoist Opens Up On DC TV Exit And Reveals Whether She'd Ever Reprise The Role

Melissa Benoist's time as the Girl of Steel is nearing its end with Supergirl's sixth season, and the actress has now weighed in on ending her tenure as the iconic hero and a possible return one day.

Supergirl is set to wrap up after six seasons on November 9, and with just a few episodes left, actress Melissa Benoist has now opened up on her departure. Talking to Entertainment Weekly, the actress admitted that walking away from the role of Kara Danvers isn't something that's fully hit her yet.

"I don't think it's really set in," she admits. "I definitely felt a different kind of closure when we wrapped on set, very bittersweet. I felt all the emotions you could feel in the last two weeks of shooting that show. But I think once the final episode airs, and I know that I really don't have to go back up to Vancouver to shoot, that's when it'll probably set in."

"I don't know if I was ready to say goodbye to the characters, which I think is healthy," Benoist continued. "You always want to be sad and miss something and I'm so glad I didn't have that, 'Oh my gosh. I'm so ready.' And just the feeling of wanting to throw it away and not think about it again. I definitely will miss playing the role, but I was ready for a break, personally."

There was some speculation that Warner Bros. pulled the plug on Supergirl because a new version of the character will be introduced in The Flash movie next year (played by Sasha Calle).

"I am not opposed to putting on the suit again and I know there probably will be opportunities to," she says, likely thinking out a future CWVerse crossover event. "It would have to feel right for the character and I know they would probably do it justice. I love playing with Grant Gustin. I love Tyler Hoechlin and Bitsie Tulloch on Superman & Lois. So no, I'm not opposed to it."

Whether that will happen remains to be seen, but Benoist landed some great acting gigs before Supergirl and will likely continue to do so as she looks to step out of this character's shadow. We definitely look forward to seeing what she does next, though it might be fun for her to step into a different superhero role after spending such a long time entrenched in this DC TV Universe.

Who do you guys think she could play in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, for example?

Would be interesting to see how she would perform in a more grounded tone if she ever appears on Superman and Lois

Although if the legion appears id hope they either do their own version or use characters who didnt appear on supergirl

How she hasn’t shown up in Superman makes no sense to me. We wouldn’t have that show without her. She deserved a cameo atleast having Superman say goodbye or see her later in some way.

I'll miss Melissa, she's been a great Supergirl and a lead.

Always wished it had one final Season but I think it had a good run and with this totem story arc it does feel like the right place to settle it down. I can't imagine how much higher the stakes could get.

For me Season 3 and Season 4 were the best (could've used more Red Daughter and the Elite but that's ok), Season 5 could've reached it as well post their great 100th episode but they sadly backpedalled. This final Season began well and although it took three episodes to build up to the main final story the last ones have been pretty good, seems it it heading too something epic.

And I am glad she's open to return down the road which almost but confirms Kara will not join Oliver in the afterlife or something like that in the finale. Maybe for next year's crossover.

Maybe she does ends up going to the 31st century at the end to help put back in place whatever Lex might have tinkered with.

Despite the show's flaws, Melissa always brought her A-game and shined in every single episode. She was/is the perfect Kara.

Wonder if we'll get to see her return for a cross-over like Crisis where she (and Grant's Flash)'ll get a goodbye like Amell's Oliver and Shipp's Flash.

Even if not, I kinda do hope she returns at some point to the role.

Melissa will always be one of the best ever to be a superhero on TV. She is now and forever Supergirl and has put her heart/soul into the role. I hope she does come back as Kara in future eps but I’m glad she is having some time to herself and on future projects.

Stop making low budget, generic shows on CW

Surely she'll have cameos on Superman and Lois? It was weird how Kara never even came up in conversation at any point throughout that series, despite the whole theme being about family. I guess they didn't want to bring her up if they knew a crossover wouldn't be possible because of Covid.

I wouldnt expect to see her on S&L for awhile. Even if it's just a cameo, just let her enjoy being a mom for a bit before jumping back into work.
