SWAMP THING Has Been Cancelled By DC Universe Less Than A Week After It Premiered

Well, that was quick! Just six days after it premiered on the DC Universe streaming service, the well-received Swamp Thing has been cancelled. We're not sure why, exactly, but read on for what we have...

DC Universe has cancelled Swamp Thing less than a week after it debuted on the streaming service.

The decision to axe the show follows a reduction in episode count from 13 to 10, which reportedly occurred because of creative differences relating to how the first season wrapped up. The completed episodes will air, but Abby Arcane and her big green pal won't return for a sophomore run.

Apparently, there are also "questions about the role of the year-old DC Universe in parent company WarnerMedia's larger streaming plans."

Whatever the reason for the cancellation, this is not going to sit well with fans of the Earth Elemental, who responded very well to the first episode. The show's second hour was also highly praised by critics.

The news was first reported by GWW before being confirmed by the trades.

Probably because they can't afford it, S1 was quite expensive for them.
Shame, i loved the pilot.

Lame! DC needs to get their head out of their *ss and get it together... Disney + will be out soon... DCU needs more content not less!

If they don’t grow a set and stand their ground.. their gonna get eaten alive

Sooo much potential.. DC just keeps squandering it...

So disappointing

@MuadDib - except that the dcu was a failure. The numbers werent there which is why its been folded in the overall wb streaming service.

@MuadDib - the fact that it's only available in the US is a huge problem right off the bat.

Another fail for WB! AGAIN James Wan is not the answer to how to approach the films and now TV series. Bringing the "horror" influence to these films will wear off quickly!
MuadDib
MuadDib - 6/6/2019, 8:55 AM
@Forthas - It all depends if n the character... horror works for Swamp Thing... don’t generalize so much...
Forthas
Forthas - 6/6/2019, 9:02 AM
@MuadDib - I don't generalize. Let's take Blade for example. It is a superhero film first that had some horror elements to it and it was more or less successful. Name a superhero film that had the opposite focus. They just tried it with Brightburn...how did that turn out?

TDKRnry88 - 6/6/2019, 9:12 AM
@Forthas - To be fair, Brightburn came out during Aladdin's premiere weekend, not to mention John Wick 3 being out, which dethroned 2019's box office champ Avengers: Endgame. It, like the other release Booksmart, had no chance. But if I'm not mistaken, it made its money back.

Forthas - 6/6/2019, 9:18 AM
@TDKRnry88 - According to Deadline the REAL budget for Brightburn was $12 million not the $6-7 million widely reported. which means it had to clear about $30 million. It is at $25 million right now.

I think Aladdin appeals to a different audience so I don't know if that had much of an effect.

@Forthas - Another fail? WB/DC has been on a winning streak on this front with both TV and film lately. What are you talking about?

Oh wait, is it because it's not based on Nolan's work?
Swamp Thing is not a superhero. Horror works for him.

In any case, I think the show was off to a pretty damn good start! I feel like this has everything to do with production costs.

@Forthas - Aquaman made $1.5 billion.

@Battabing -

The link above states...

"The decision seemingly boils down to WarnerMedia/AT&T executives not liking the direction of the show, not budget or performance on DC Universe (which we hear is solid)."

"Oh wait, is it because it's not based on Nolan's work?"
Yeah that is right! The closest thing to a superhero series that mimics Nolan's approach is Arrow (at least in the beginning). Last I saw it was on its eight season!

...but Shazam made only $362 million!

@CaptainDC - Not sure where you got 1.5 billion from for Aquaman - It actually made Worldwide: $1,147,761,807

@Forthas - Dude, read the actual monetary report from North Carolina, not just clickbait entertainment news.

https://www.starnewsonline.com/news/20190603/swamp-thing-uncle-frank-eligible-for-13-million-in-nc-grants

https://www.starnewsonline.com/news/20190429/film-funding-nearly-cut-from-nc-house-budget?fbclid=IwAR1XysQLXIl9j4NYLDj9A_67Eu0AgZuVu76ePUgpz2TDYpRMb4SpEt4XEhM

The tax rebate that was promised to WB/DC was half of the $80M it cost to make the show. However, that was a clerical error that was corrected by the time Swamp Thing was on episode 7 or 8. Instead of $40M, NC could only commit to $14M, leaving WB with an additional $26M to cover. It was too expensive. That's why WB cut production from 13 episodes to 10.

NOw, instead of creating a second season with obvious lower quality production compared to season one, they just decided to cancel the show.

Frankly, I can understand that. It's a crying shame because I think the first episode was pretty damn strong, and a lot of people are going to be out of work, but that's Hollywood for you.

But go ahead, keep acting like you know better than everyone else.

Forthas - 6/6/2019, 10:44 AM
@Battabing - I do read more than "[fick]ing scoop news." For all I know what you posted is not the whole story. Because it seems odd to me that Warner Media would be so dependent on a tax rebate. For example what if the show were a big hit and that rebate were not available for the next year...would they just cancel the show abruptly? Does not make a lot of sense! I am sure we will get more information in the near future. But maybe you should take a good nap from time to time!
Himura
Himura - 6/6/2019, 10:50 AM
@Forthas - moron. The reason why this show is so good is because of the horror aspect. You clearly want the same generic boring comic book show / movie
Battabing
Battabing - 6/6/2019, 10:52 AM
@Forthas - I'm sure they jumped at the chance of getting half their costs covered. I sure everyone acted out of good faith. People make mistakes.

But you're over here trying to make it seem like turning to James Wan ($1.1B Aquaman film)as a creative partner was the problem. You're always looking for a way to shiv one creator in favor of Chris Nolan.

[frick]ing chill, man.
