THE SANDMAN And DOOM PATROL Spinoff DEAD BOY DETECTIVES Gets HBO Max Pilot Order

It looks like the Dead Boy Detectives might be making their way to HBO Max, as the streaming service has put in a pilot order for a show based on characters first introduced in the pages of The Sandman.

Variety reports that HBO Max has ordered a pilot for a potential Dead Boy Detectives series from Berlanti Productions, with Steve Yockey on board as writer and executive producer. Jeremy Carver is also executive producing.

Created by Neil Gaiman, the Dead Boy Detectives were first introduced in the pages of The Sandman before going on to appear in the likes of The Books of Magic, Children's Crusade, Doom Patrol, and more. In the comics, Charles Rowland and Edwin Paine were a pair of murdered school boys who decided not to enter the afterlife in order to stay on earth and investigate crimes involving the supernatural.

Rowland and Paine are actually set to feature in the upcoming third season of Doom Patrol, and will be played by Sebastian Croft and Ty Tennant (respectively). The actors are not expected to reprise the roles for this pilot, however.

Whether the characters show up in Netflix's The Sandman adaptation remains to be seen, but since they weren't introduced until the Season of Mists arc in issue #25, it'll probably be some time before we find out one way or the other.

No director is currently attached to the Dead Boy Detectives pilot, but production is scheduled to begin in November.
