So far, season eight of Game of Thrones has exceeded expectations. And as a result of the coming weekend, it looks like a lot of characters will not be returning for the remainder of the series. After eight years of buildup, everything is now coming to a head.

As for the future of the franchise, several spinoffs have been in development at HBO for the past several years, Though one may be shooting its pilot this year, another, headed by writer Bryan Cogman and George R.R. Martin, has been cancelled altogether.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, this is what Cogman had to say on the matter:

I'm definitely leaving. I was developing one of the successor shows with George. George has worked with a bunch of the writers, including Jane, whose show is being done [as a pilot]. My prequel show is not happening and will not happen. HBO decided to go a different way. I'm working with Amazon now and helping them out with their shows. So, it is a goodbye. I am done with Westeros. It's wonderfully bittersweet...

Bryan Cogman had previously written a great deal of the series' episodes, and with the help of Martin, it is a shame that his project did not come forward.

Do you think Game of Thrones should have spinoffs?

@PantherKing - Did you read the article? They started casting for Jane's prequel series. That's the one that's actually shooting a pilot.

I blame this on AT&T, because they've been changing a lot of different projects since they were able to buy Time Warner. Our government should never have allowed that sale and now it looks like a lot of HBO shows will be cancelled or not move on because of it.

As long as his wasn’t titled “Sword Of the Morning”

Would like to see a Series focus on either Arthur Dayne or another.
