GAME OF THRONES: George R.R. Martin Hopes To Have THE WINDS OF WINTER Finished By 2021

Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin has shared a long overdue update on The Winds of Winter, and it sounds like he's hoping to have it done and in stores by as soon as next year. Check it out!

If there's one reason to be thankful for the quarantine we find ourselves in, it's the fact that Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin has been forced to stay at home to finish writing The Winds of Winter. He's been penning the novel for close to a decade, and it seems he's finally making some real progress based on his latest blog post.

"If nothing else, the enforced isolation has helped me write," he admits. "I am spending long hours every day on The Winds of Winter and making steady progress. I finished a new chapter yesterday, another one three days ago, another one the previous week."

The prolific author added that this will be a "huge book," and noted that he believes it could be released in 2021. He indicated that many parts are now finished, specifically those revolving around "Cersei, Asha, Tyrion, Ser Barristan, and Areo Hotah."

He added: "I will be dropping back into Braavos next week. I have bad days, which get me down, and good days, which lift me up, but all in all I am pleased with the way things are going."

It's a real shame that it's taken this long for The Winds of Winter to near completion, but it seems we're finally getting there - although you have to hope it doesn't take quite this long for the seventh and final volume, especially as fans remain anxious to see how Martin intends to end the story (the hope is that it won't be quite as underwhelming as the TV series).

What are your thoughts on this latest update?

@dracula -
I was watching something on Starz where a prisoner was getting raped (romanced?) by his jailer. Was it this show?

I've got one and a quarter books left before I'm caught up with the ASOIAF books. My hope was that the next book would have been out by the time I did so. Boy was I'm mistaken. The guys lucky his Wild Cards series is so many damn books so I can space them out

I genuinely don’t mean this to come across as crass, but I think this is going to be another wheel of time. I legit think GRRM will die before finishing it and another fantasy author will have to come in and complete it using his copious notes.

It’s too co-incidental that almost the minute the show came out, the books were neglected. 10 years is ridiculous. I don’t know how he still has the interest or stamina.

@CLTMAN29 - I think WoW will come out, but if he passes before ADoS at least we can enjoy the books he's released. His turnover rate has gone down, and when he did book 3 he was averaging 150pages a month...he won't hit that pace again, but I can't wait for his next one to come out, it's going to be epic.

The new books will get interest for sure.

But the publishers have to be annoyed that it didn't come out during the show.

The general public would have moved on...

Ah well, it is his thing, doesn't owe us anything

can't wait for this undeserved hype to die down.
I read the first two books and while they were good reads I don't get why they're so damn hyped. People are treating him like he's the second coming of Tolkien...
Canon108
Canon108 - 6/24/2020, 4:06 PM
@Blergh - he's on par, his books are fantastic. And Tolkien, although great really needed an editor. Too many pointless songs, and the plot goes nowhere during the Bombadil chapters, like Tolkien didn't know what he was doing. Jackson was wise to cut that out. Easily the most useless part of the book.

Well whenever he finishes it, it'll probably still be before Kingkiller Book 3 comes out.
