VIDEO: Conan Shows George R.R. Martin Some Fan Reactions To Sunday's GAME OF THRONES

The author appeared on Conan O'Brien's show last night, and after grilling him about his penchant for killing off beloved characters the host showed Martin some reactions from fans as they watched events unfold in the ninth episode of season 3, "The Rains Of Castamere"..

Why does George R.R. Martin like to kill off so many of his heroes? “I always like unexpected things", he tells Conan. "I always like the suspense to be real ... I want my readers, I want my viewers to be afraid when my characters are in danger. I want them to be afraid to turn the next page ... ” I can't really argue with that. Sure it makes for gut wrenching reading/watching, but I would take some real drama over the same old predictable hero-wins-the day stuff anytime. Anyway, not all fans feel that way and many were noticeably upset after witnessing the Red Wedding on Sunday, so Conan decided to give Martin a look at how his writing had effected them! The whole segment is well worth a watch but skip on to around 5:19 if you just want to see the reactions.

So for the past 70 some odd years, letting the "good guys" live is not considered "real drama"? Eff GOT and GRRM. Not impressed in the least.

Askanason - I think you misinterpreted the authors meaning. He's saying that the formulaic ways of books, tvs, movies, etc is very predictable and if you're as much of a fan of fiction as I am, then you can mostly see foreshadowing and mostly predict how conflicts will end. Like you said ie good guys always beat bass guys, etc.

I for one find this show refreshing that its not cut and dry who's good, who's bad, and how conflicts are resolved is an "edge of your seat experience", since anyone can die at any time...and not just for the sake of creating drama.

Here's a tip, Game of Thrones fans...READ A BOOK. It was interesting to see so many more girls reacting to this scene than guys. Are the guys actually reading the books or do they not give a shit?

I will say in comparing the scene in the show to the book's version... It was nicely executed! ;-)
