As good as I think this movie will be, I really don't think it's going to be breaking any records. Overall I expect it to be quite successful and will have a long run in the theaters but I think its success will definitely be over the long term rather than short term.

its never going to make as much money as TDK or Spiderman etc because its rated R. Im sure it will still make bags of cash

It only needs to top like 80 - 90 mil to break the R record I believe, my guess is 100 mil.

considering that spiderman and batman have been pop culture icons for as long as i can remember, I seriously doubt watchmen will catch it, and the R rating isnt going to help that, it should still open at #1 tho.

damn it!!! I can't make new articles!!!!!

Uwe Boll (the greatest comic book movie villain ever) has reached a new level of douchery, not only does he make awful films, he expects his "fans" to finance his new film.... now he is not just happy stealing the ticket money and DVD sales, he decided to go higher up.

Uwe Boll plans to steal more of your money

As for Watchmen, I think it will do 75 mill, just half of what the TDK did.

I have found this movie has little appeal beyond the comic community. Of all the ppl I know personally, only 3 collect comics. Those 3 are the only ones who have stated any interest to me. Everyone else is just shrugging their shoulders asking, "Who the hell are the Watchmen?" However I've learned to never underestimate fanbase for such cult classics as this. I remember when people were camping in front of the theater to see the new Star Wars movie's, weeks ahead of time in some cities. So I do think it could top the 100 million mark, I might be thinking too hopefully though.

OK reasons that WATCHMEN WONT do as well as people think it will.
its rated R yeah not to movie friendly
they changed a few key things fans are NOT happy (we know those people r here 2)
CNN did a survey in times square 1/4 people knew what watchmen was and only 1/2 of that 1/4 wanted to see it not very good stats

As much as I would love to see some records broken, I just don't think it will happen. A lot of that is not due to the cult status of Watchmen, but because apparently the cinematography is a bit "off". From what I understand (and keep in mind this is from actual cinema critics, no comic fans), Snyder tried to remain so faithful to the comic, scene for scene, that the characters are often "cramped" into shots (not literally). There is no time to appreciate the sequences for the general movie-goer. I believe this is mostly due to good ole' fashioned time constraints.

I do, however, believe that the DVD release (which should fix most of these problems) will have record sales.

RE: noob

if it hits 75 mil it will still be one of the highest R openings of all time, top ten or twenty I think.

300 made 70 million. Watchmen will probably make slightly more than that.
brokenstructure
brokenstructure - 3/3/2009, 10:46 AM
Well 300 was rated R and earned 70 million. And as far as I know Watchmen is more popular and has been advertised alot more than 300. I predict 80 to 90 million opening weekend.

broken_structure is right about 300. Way less advertising and no one knew what it was really about. It did LOOK different though and they used, "From the creator of Sin City" in the ads. That helped a bit.

300 had a HUGE buzz though and the story wasnt as complicated as Watchmen. (Plus, it was based off of something factual) 300 had "date movie" written all over it. Awesome violence for the guys and half naked, steroid using dudes in loin cloth undies and capes, for the girls.

I think Watchmen will get between 70 and 90 million maybe. 90 is pushing it though. Maybe.

yeah this one was a hard one. I had totally forgotten that it wouldn't do so well because is was rated R which would set back a lot of moviegoers. I'm ptetty sure all comic book fans (not just of Watchmen but of all sorts) would watch it. Maybe they would even watch it 2 or 3 times (I'm gonna probably watch it 4-5 times if it's good). And I also take into consideration the fact that 300 made 70 million. So I agree with everyone talking about 300, Watchmen will most likely make more than 300

Jeez comic book movies are reigning over the movie industry. AWESOME!!!

pretty silly comparables list btw, since like only 1 or 2 other movies on that were rated R.

I'll say it will not break $50 mill and make less then $20 for week # 2.

@ broken_structure ..

I heard of the Battle of the 300, LONG before the movie was even thought of, and probally even the comic book (which I never heard of untill the movie, I learned of the Battle in school in history class). How can something that acctually happened be less popular then a work of fiction. Remember, 300 had a huge fan base without the comics. With all the professors and history students that studied the battle. Not to mention an entire country that holds the story is high esteam. Our military has used it as an example of what few can do against many, in their training. So it had a giant following without even knowing. Seeing that of all my friends, only 1 knew of Watchmen before the trailor came out. In reverse, 80% of those same people had some knowledge of the 300 before the film was out. Just my personal experience. As for Watchmen being advertised so much. Ive found myself bored and even tired of seeing these commercials every other break.

Unfortunatly with all the advertising they have done, and the HUGE BUDGET. Watchmen will need to make GIANT money to acctually make money.

Ill guess 40 mill, then depending on word of mouth, we will see how well the film does. But it probally needs to make 500-600 mill, just the break even. So, yeah it better make more the 300 and V combined. Remember, 300 made more money overseas then it did in America. I dont see this movie playing as well overseas.

As a comic book movie fan, I will wait to hear what word of mouth sounds like. This is not a HAVE to see for me, having never heard of it before goin to TDK. So if the word of mouth is bad, I will wait for DVD, and then I will just rent or borrow.

@ xaosjerk..

300 is 3rd all time in R rated openings. Watchmen will be lucky to crack the top 15 of R rated openings. 58 million is the number to crack the top 5. 40 million to crack the top 15, that looks to be more reasonable.

You know what would be funny as all hell. If Watchmen couldn't cover the Sex and the City or 8 Mile openings. 8 Mile is probally the worst movie I have ever seen. Ok, Max Payne is up there with it. I never saw Sex in the City. Why was that rated R? Did those old broads get naked or something?
xaosjerk
xaosjerk - 3/4/2009, 3:15 AM
RE pierce: I think it will actually do better than 300 so I guess I'm saying it's going to be #1-3 of all time for R movies. Maybe not, maybe this movie will just be too smart to get the numbers in there, but we'll see.

I did predict the presidential election numbers three months out within 1 percent though.

I'm going to get specific and put my number at 95 million dollars. let the results damn or exalt me.
brokenstructure
brokenstructure - 3/4/2009, 6:56 AM
Probably one of the biggest problems I see though is that it is almost 3 hours long. Me being a fan the length makes me happy and I am bound to see it several times. Most people thought will only take the time to watch that long of a movie once. So I'm hoping it does good enough to beat 300 but it might be hard considering it won't have that many repeat watchers.

@ xaosjerk

Thats a bold prediction. I dont think this film has the following that Jesus does. Remember, Passion of the Christ is the top rated R opener. I dont see the religious people coming out in full force to see this movie. That is how that film made so much. This film, has a following, but not that big.

The 3 hr run time is gonna kill this movie. Being that it is R, you cant have the highschool kids coming on their own, like they could have for TDK. You also have to pay for the prints, which for a 3 hr movie, is upwards of 60k per print, more for the IMAX prints. Im guessing they will release HUGE, almost 3000 screens, so do the math. Also, with all the ads they are running, its out of control. Those are not cheap to put together, or air. This might be the biggest gamble in a long time for WB. They are banking on the fanboys going to see this film 4-5 times. And hoping everyone else will at least give it one shot. It still might not be enough. Because of the movie within a movie, that DVD better be the best selling DVD of all time. Also, in this economy, alot of people just dont have the extra time or cash to go see movies.

Im going with 40 million. Which is respectable, but not what they need. With all the mixed reviews out there, that might scare people away. Even the good reviews Im seeing, are finding faults in something.

I could have told you, when he gave the speach at the Dem Convention in 04, that Barack was gonna win. That was not a big prediction, at all. It was pretty obvious. Especially once Palin showed up.

RE: Pierce

I said predicted within 1 percent, not that he was going to win, that means I'm saying I predicted the amount he won by by 1% not that he won, big difference here.

if passion is #1 which looks right it was at 83 million or so, so yeah I'm saying this makes #1 R movie opening of all time. Down with Jesus I say!

Watchmen has made over $25 million on the midnight showing and Friday sales. Saturday is typically the bigger day of the weekend for movie ticket sales so theoretically it could break $70 million for the weekend.
alten2345
alten2345 - 3/8/2009, 4:24 PM
Well it made a little less than $60 million opening weekend which is not surprising, based on it's length. One person commented that this movie will need to make over $500 million to break even because of the big budget. The budget was actually fairly small ($150 million.) Take into account advertising, the cut Fox is going to get, etc. and I'd say that if this movie makes over $300 million it's at the break even point. Add in overseas ticket sales, DVD sales, etc. and I'd say financially this movie is an unqualified success.
