AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Star Iain De Caestecker Explains Why He Has No Interest In Joining The MCU As Fitz

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Iain De Caestecker has revealed why he's not looking to reprise the role of Agent Fitz in the MCU, while also sharing his take on whether the show should be considered canon.

There was a lot of excitement when Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. launched on ABC, but despite some noteworthy MCU tie-ins, negative reviews and a very different take on S.H.I.E.L.D. to what fans expected saw ratings quickly plummet. The show would ultimately find its feet, though, and developed a loyal fanbase who followed it through seven seasons.

As time passed, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. became increasingly more standalone in nature, shifting away from even attempting to line up with what was happening in the movies. Now, we know that the division between Marvel Studios and Marvel Television was at the heart of this decision.

Debates about whether the series should be considered "canon" rage on, and we have heard rumblings recently that Chloe Bennet is being eyed to reprise the role of Daisy Johnson/Quake.

One person who isn't looking to join the MCU, however, is Fitz actor Iain De Caestecker.

"I think I would say probably no," he told Digital Spy about possibly returning as the character. "And not that I didn't have a fantastic time doing it. I think, after everything that happened to those two characters [Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons], they really gave them a happy ending. And I think it would be so sad to mess with that again. It's not fair."

"I'm not sure they would survive it this time," De Caestecker continued. "So I like the idea that they're living a life of normality outside of the S.H.I.E.L.D."

Asked for his take on whether Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is canon, the actor admitted that he doesn't know, but believes the show probably should be considered part of the MCU. "I would say you might have to, because I think the original conception of the show was the fact that Coulson had come from the Avengers, isn't it? I think you would kind of have to say it is canon."

We've yet to see the series referenced in a meaningful way, and it's actually been contradicted on a handful of occasions (such as the Darkhold being rebooted for WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness).

Like with Daredevil, time will tell just how much Marvel Studios plans to borrow from Marvel Television and who or what they'll choose to make canon. We'll be sure to keep you updated.

That’s okay because the Fitz and Simmons characters are two of my least favorites from AOS

I think we can consider the AoS and all other Marvel TV shows dofferent realities within the MCU. And that way, we can still have him return as a variant of his AoS character. One that shouldn't be too different though, since he was probably my favorite character on the show (together with Mack and Ghost Rider).

@bkmeijer1 - Or we can just consider AoS canon. Season 1-4 = MCU, Season 5-7 = Multiverse, which is also MCU.

@seakhan - that's kinda how I do see it. It's from the moment they start jumping through time at the end of season 4 that they start creating new universes according to Endgame's (correct) time travel rules after all.

Since he doesn't want to come back, but she does, I guess, is she "does" come back, his character (which won't be seen) will be taking care of their monkey while she does her "science" stuff to help the world.

"we have heard rumblings recently that Chloe Benet is being eyed to reprise the role of Daisy Johnson/Quake.

Hrm...yep, heard the same rumors!

But even having Chloe back as another character would be cool with me.

Maybe a mutant...heh...they're turning all their Inhumans into Mutants, giustizia divina!

I know i wanted her as Kitty Pryde a long time ago, but...it's too late now i guess, maybe always has been...

I got the feeling that towards the end Iain didn't even want to be there, so this is no surprise.

Nevertheless FitzSimmons were always my favourite part of the show since day 1. The stuff with Ward in s2, and then the framework arc, are the peak episodes of the show for me.

Ironically my least favourite part of the show was always Skye/Daisy. And if the rumours are true then she is the one that is coming back and I'm very meh on that.

Since Iain De Caestecker days in Marvel are done I wouldn't mind seeing him in DC as Metallo,Eclipso ,or Eobard Thawne

This dude is so good and needs to get more roles. Went from the comedic relief to one of the best character arcs as soon as the writers found out that he is easily the best actor on the show ( not that the others aren’t great).

Wouldn't mind a scene of Alya Fitz and Morgan Stark having a tea party, though.

i just wish we could get some definitive official answers on whats in and whats not in 616 universe. its not spoilery to tell us how to you plan to approach past properties in the future. feige telling us agents of shield counts or don't counts doesn't ruin any surprises he has in the future. the multiverse stuff shouldn't be this vague. i only accept this vagueness on the grounds that he plans to reunite coulson with whats left of the avengers in the future. other than that this needs to be resolved so everyone can stop guessing and making theories.

@supermanrex - Best way to clear up vagueness of AoS: Season 1-4 = MCU, Season 5-7 = Multiverse, which is also MCU. Just because the Darkhold's cover looks different, Josh Wilding & others are dead-set on tossing AoS into the mouth of Alioth. But alas, it's far more easy to leave it as canon, sit back, and enjoy it as such. It's a great, fun show and it was so awesome to watch an episode that set up a movie, go to the theater to see "Winter Soldier" or "Thor Dark World" or "Age of Ultron" or "Doctor Strange" even, then come back the next week to watch the next episode deal with the events of the movie. Josh & Co need stop trying to erase AoS -- it's super annoying & achieves nothing.

I wouldnt want there characters to return either. AOS was a roller coaster for them. Let them live happily. However bringing back Chloe Bennet is a must.

I just want Chloe Bennet back TBH. Let Fitzsimmons have their happy ending.

He had one of the most incredible, engaging performances in a comic book series I've ever seen. But there's 0% chance Marvel ever acknowledges his character

Oh boy I'm late to the party on this article...

He got his happy ending with Simmons so we're good on that front.

Mack, Daisy and Sousa and perhaps even May are a different story however.

Bring back Daisy and Sousa I SAY!!!

I get that he feels protective of his character, hopefully Feige can understand that too if there are plans to bring him back.

I still think the best play to re-introduce the characters would be in Secret Invasion which is also a little weird that we're gonna be two years with the Disney+ shows and new films and yet nothing about Skrulls being among the series and movies.
