There was a lot of excitement when Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. launched on ABC, but despite some noteworthy MCU tie-ins, negative reviews and a very different take on S.H.I.E.L.D. to what fans expected saw ratings quickly plummet. The show would ultimately find its feet, though, and developed a loyal fanbase who followed it through seven seasons.
As time passed, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. became increasingly more standalone in nature, shifting away from even attempting to line up with what was happening in the movies. Now, we know that the division between Marvel Studios and Marvel Television was at the heart of this decision.
Debates about whether the series should be considered "canon" rage on, and we have heard rumblings recently that Chloe Bennet is being eyed to reprise the role of Daisy Johnson/Quake.
One person who isn't looking to join the MCU, however, is Fitz actor Iain De Caestecker.
"I think I would say probably no," he told Digital Spy about possibly returning as the character. "And not that I didn't have a fantastic time doing it. I think, after everything that happened to those two characters [Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons], they really gave them a happy ending. And I think it would be so sad to mess with that again. It's not fair."
"I'm not sure they would survive it this time," De Caestecker continued. "So I like the idea that they're living a life of normality outside of the S.H.I.E.L.D."
Asked for his take on whether Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is canon, the actor admitted that he doesn't know, but believes the show probably should be considered part of the MCU. "I would say you might have to, because I think the original conception of the show was the fact that Coulson had come from the Avengers, isn't it? I think you would kind of have to say it is canon."
We've yet to see the series referenced in a meaningful way, and it's actually been contradicted on a handful of occasions (such as the Darkhold being rebooted for WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness).
Like with Daredevil, time will tell just how much Marvel Studios plans to borrow from Marvel Television and who or what they'll choose to make canon. We'll be sure to keep you updated.
