Clark Gregg Will Return To Helm The Sixth Season Premiere Of Marvel's AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

While the jury's still out on whether Clark Gregg will return as a series regular for Marvel's Agents of SHIELD season six, Marvel Television has just confirmed that he'll be back as a director.

Before today's SDCC festivities get underway, Marvel Television has dropped a pretty cool piece of news as they've just announced that Clark Gregg will return to direct the season premiere of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season six.

No further details were provided, but the episode is titled "Missing Pieces" and was written by showrunners Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. It's expected to begin filming within the next week or two.

While Gregg will return in a directing capacity, it remains to be seen whether his Agent Phil Coulson will be resurrected yet again to lead his now grown-up S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, especially considering that his character is now presumed dead following the events of May's fifth season finale. Gregg and the rest of the cast has remained relatively vague about his involvement in the coming season, which is set for a Summer 2019 debut, but based on his return to the director's chair, it's probably a safe bet that he'll also be back as a series regular for the 13-episode sixth year.

On another note, Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that Jeff Ward (Deke Shaw) has been promoted to series regular for the next season.

In light of the Sokovia Accords, and with Hydra obliterated, S.H.I.E.L.D. has been legitimatized again and no longer needs to operate in the shadows. Since the world presumes that Coulson is dead, the organization needed a new Director (Jason O’Mara) to be the face of the organization. Coulson finds himself back in the role as an agent and teamed with Mack (Henry Simmons), and together they are tasked with tracking down and confirming the presence of Enhanced people, aka Inhumans. They have been trying to track down and capture Daisy (Chloe Bennet), aka Quake, who has gone rogue in an attempt to atone for sins from the past. But with the world believing that Daisy is a dangerous outlaw who has taken down banks and bridges, the new Director has no qualms about taking her down for good. Agent May (Ming-Na Wen) is tasked with training specialist strike teams, and Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) have taken a big step forward in their relationship. But with Simmons’ new promotion as Special Advisor to the Director in Science and Technology, Fitz, as well as her former team members, finds it hard to confide in or trust her since she’s now the Director’s confidant.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. features:
Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson
Ming-Na Wen as Melinda May
Chloe Bennet as Daisy Johnson/Quake
Iain De Caestecker as Leo Fitz
Elizabeth Henstridge as Jemma Simmons
Henry Simmons as Alphonso "Mack" MacKenzie
Natalia Cordova-Buckley as Elena "Yo-Yo" Rodriguez
Nick Blood as Lance Hunter

That’s great news! Maybe he’ll be back in flashbacks. I thought Season 5’s finale was the perfect send off for him.

Excited to see what they do with the next season and if there is any avengers tie in.

He most likely appear in flashbacks if at all. It would be a mistake to backtrack on Coulson's finale of last season when they basically returned his character to the grave in the perfect way.

Or if they are going to have a season dealing with time travel again, the team could pick up a younger Coulson from the past. I'm still hoping that because they explored the future last season, they will go back in time for season 6 and we'll see the formation of SHIELD and maybe finish off that cliffhanger from Agent Carter. It's a long shot, but a storyline like that would make it easy to incorporate Coulson again without undoing his great conclusion.

Maybe Phil Coulson left a toolbox like Fury left to him? Only this time, we could get fun holo-Phil in the mix

Looking forward to this especially since a lot of jokers didn't want the show to make it to a 6th season.

@Kyos - True 'dat.

But we True Believers held on, and now we are at season SIX, and it turned out to be the very best comic book television show on record.

He really is the "missing" piece in the whole MCU :( Since his "death" in The Avengers, MCU has never been the same again.

You cannot have Agents of SHIELD without Phil Coulson. You simply cannot.
