Is Foggy Nelson Ruining Daredevil For Anyone Else?

Is Foggy Nelson Ruining Daredevil For Anyone Else?

While Netflix's Daredevil got many aspects of the comics right, the show sinks from the weight of the Foggy Nelson character. Hit the jump.

Many characters of Netflix’s Daredevil are spot on. Charlie Cox in the titular role works, and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk, far and away the best aspect of Daredevil, commands his scenes. However, all the good in this series almost completely undoes itself with the role of Foggy Nelson.

Elden Henson, the lesser half of the Mighty Ducks’ “Bash Bros,” somehow landed the intolerable role of Matt Murdock’s best friend and confidant. Although, in the comics, Foggy Nelson is often the comic relief, the “humor” offered in this series is excruciatingly bad. The affable and quirky loser that is Nelson rubs off in the worst sort of way. This series has brewed the perfect storm of a bad character with worse dialog, played still by a worse actor.  The result of this amalgamation is something that would be expected on Glee, not Netflix’s generally superb list of original series.

Despite Foggy, I enjoyed this series. However, I certainly could not have been the only one who wondered if they would miss any storyline by fast forwarding through Foggy’s drunken rants, of which, unfortunately, there is more than one. Foggy Nelson is simply not up to the standards that Marvel has set in drafting their characters for the screen. Here is hoping Foggy does not cameo in AKA Jessica Jones.

Am I the only one who cannot bear this character? Can Bullseye kill him off in season two? Would John Favreau be willing to reprise his role?

I've heard some people have similar complaints about Foggy's portrayal in the show, but I don't see it. I think he's perfectly casted in the show, in fact the scenes between Foggy and Matt bonding back in college are some of my favorite scenes.

I agree. Foggy's somewhat of an annoying guy, but that's his character and I don't think it's insufferable. It's mostly during the college flashbacks that he's annoying, tbh. Other than that, I think he's perfectly cast.

I agree for the most part.

I couldn't tell if we were supposed to laugh at his jokes, or laugh at him because he always makes unfunny jokes. Either way, I wasn't laughing, but rather cringing.

He fared much better with the drama though.

My biggest complaint about this show.

Wait, people don't like him? He reminds me of Cisco, the (possible) breakout Flash character.

I like Elden's portrayal.

Well...

Could use some better jokes. Although, not absolutely unbearable, since he's got his own righteous demeanor and his thing for Karen (made moot by [frick]ing you know who), the character sucks. The actor is definitely capable or else I would have also cringed at those redeeming moments.

He did a good job with what he was given. Despite what many on this site would have you believe, you need a little bit of fun to break up the darkness. Otherwise it just won't feel real, because we as humans aren't completely humorless.

I thought he was great. God forbid there's a joke in comic shows. Even bad ones. Hell, not only was he supposed to be awkward and goofy, he makes fun of himself for being awkward and goofy.

He was a little goofy, but I thought the actor was likable enough.
Not the best character, but he didn't bring the show down at all for me.
It sounds like you just don't like the actor himself or the idea of a comic relief character.

I thought he was okay, a terrible actor until Nelson v Murdock. That episode sold me on Foggy.

I agree completely. One of the many reasons why I stopped watching this crap. SMH.

He's perfect. He's the foil, he's the friend, he and Debra Anne Woll have real chemistry. I just think he has some obscure references you don't get and he is very self aware and self iffacing.

I absolutely disagree. I think he is a great addition to the series. With all the darkness we need some light moments and he is relatable. The relationship between all of them is great.

Only the first two episodes... He made it a tad unwatchable. Didn't mind him too much going forward.

I agree with what was said above. He's almost like Cisco (annoying as hell, but has his moments).

Except no, not breakout characters.

Wait is Cisco really considered so? [Frick] me.

I really liked him. His dynamic with Matt was great and in a lot of ways, it made the series a lot better for me.

CombatWombat

He's not the best ... someone mentioned Cisco from the Flash, and yeah they're kind of similar in the way that they're both written as inherently annoying characters. The only thing is that Carlos Valdes just has that abstract "something" that makes him charming and likable in spite of everything. I feel like Eldon Henson doesn't really have that.

Might have something to do with the actor, but I think it has more to do with the show not really knowing what to do with a character like him. If you actually listen to his lines, he's not poorly written. It just feels like the show wants to be so constantly dark that it just treats Foggy as, "Oh, and that guy..."

Karen Page is great though, which is impressive considering Deborah Ann Woll is playing the really boring Silver Age version of Karen Page right now. I'm guessing she'll evolve into Frank Miller's Karen Page as the show goes on in further seasons.
