Assembled: The Making of Hawkeye arrived on Disney+ today, and the hour-long documentary sheds a lot of light on the work that went into dreaming up the six-part series. As well as diving into the action scenes, Rogers: The Musical, and Vincent D'Onofrio's return as The Kingpin, actress Alaqua Cox also opens up on her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as Maya Lopez.
Hawkeye served as an origin story for the character, but it appears significant changes were made to her arc during reshoots (which has become the norm for Marvel Studios).
Among them seems to have been Maya's role in the final battle...and her appearance. As you can see from the photos below, she was supposed to head into action with a version of her face paint from the comic books. While it only covers her cheek - likely a reference to the bloody handprint her father left there after being killed by the Ronin - it's a badass look, so why was it scrapped?
With an Echo spinoff series in the works for Disney+, common sense says Maya's transformation from gangster to superhero will be further explored. This should lead to a new look for the character, and hopefully an even more comic accurate take on the handprint that's such a pivotal part of her story.
In the closing moments of Hawkeye's finale, Maya gunned down Wilson Fisk, but comic books fans will know that's not necessarily the end for the villain, so we expect to see him return in Echo.
