LOKI Head Writer Comments On Possible SECRET WARS Connection - SPOILERS

In a new interview, Marvel's Loki Head Writer Michael Waldron was asked about a possible Secret Wars connection in the first episode, and gave a very interesting response. Mild spoilers ahead...

Marvel's Loki is set to hit Disney+ this Wodensday, and the series premiere wastes little time in delving into what became of Tom Hiddleston's God of Mischief when he absconded with the Tesseract in Avengers: Endgame. We already know that the Asgardian trickster "God" will be apprehended by the TVA, but what happens next might be considered a bit of a spoilers, so fair warning before you read any further.

Once he's accepted his captivity (more or less), Loki is given a crash course on the history of the TVA via an awesome animated sequence which introduces the Time Keepers, and explains the sacred timeline along with the events that led to the first "Multiversal War." We later learn that further disturbances in the timeline could lead to another Multiverse conflict.

While speaking to Murphy's Multiverse, head writer Michael Waldron was asked if this might be a nod or reference to classic Marvel Comics event, Secret Wars.

"We'll see," he replied. "You'll probably know, as well as I do, not everything is just there. If the purpose of that whole thing was to just indoctrinate the audience and everything. Yeah, we'll see how this plays out in the MCU moving forward."

This is obviously far from any kind of confirmation, but it does sound like the scene might have been an intentional nod to the next big MCU Multiverse-spanning event. Whether that turns out to be Secret Wars or not remains to be seen, but Kevin Feige did recently claim that Loki will have a bigger impact on this shared world than the previous Disney+ shows, so we're going to be watching the rest of the miniseries very closely.

I see "Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars" and the 2015 event "Secret Wars" conflated all the time. The above article references a Multiverse level war as a possible reference to the "classic event." Except... the original Secret Wars was about heroes and villains being put on a planet by the Beyonder to find out if good or evil is stronger. The 2015 SW is about the multiverse. When people talk about the MCU doing Secret Wars, WHICH Secret Wars are they talking about?

@DalekCraigWasson - when it comes to the MCU, it often ends up being a blend of the stories

@DalekCraigWasson - Well most of those people have only read a handful of comics so they don't know themselves. They just got the name Secret Wars from some article or Youtube video.

@kider2 - or a marvel wiki, which can catch you up on ANY original storyline. Don't look down on those who didn't read the comics. For some, that's simply not their preferred medium for enjoying the genre 🤷🏾‍♂️

@DalekCraigWasson - Yeah this drives me crazy too, especially because there's an entirely separate event called 'Secret War' that's swimming out there too (and is a great read)

@OmegaDaGrodd - Secret War is Bendis' greatest work of his entire career. Its so good!

Yeah sounds like they're trending towards that. Eith the de aging tech (for Tony and banner), and the fans clamoring to see the original avengers on screen with the future xmen, and the Russos saying they would come back for secret war...

I know the gears have been turning in Lord Feiges head

@Vigor - Secret Wars is the perfect opportunity for that. They might only take Beyonder and Battleworld and change the rest, but it would almost be a shame not to adapt that one day.

I'd bet we'll see a reference to Battleworld. The mosaic planet. The fusion of "fragments" of several destroyed universes. A place where everyone fights to the death.
Vigor
Vigor - 6/7/2021, 3:21 PM
@Repian - yeah

And I wonder if this will occur before, during or after the Kang storyline. Knowing the MCU they will tie it all together

@Vigor - - I think "What if ..." and "Loki" are related to Secret Wars. I think Uatu is similar to Raiden in MK because there will soon be a great battle between universes. So, he watches the most formidable warriors in the multiverse and our Loki is watched by Uatu. He will be chosen to fight on the Battleword.

@Repian - could see a Ready Player One kind of a final batlle were there were cameos from all Marvel Media like Jackmans Wolerine for 10 seconds but not as main characters.

I see them TEASING a few different multiverse threads that can always be picked up later.

Like Wakanda being an eater egg in IM2 and then fully mentioned in AOU. Little building blocks.

@BlackBeltJones - yeah. I really don't see them doing either secret wars. The first one is, at this point, too much of a typical crossover event that a movie version will probably just have the name and beyonder as a villain, and the second one is too much of an infinity war/endgame event to just do this soon when they're basically restarting much of the mcu.

@Origame - You really think Marvel studios won’t adapt the biggest Marvel crossover of all time to film? I’m willing to bet my entire lives savings on it. Charles Murphy also disclosed it’s due to come either 2025 or 26.

@BreakTheCode - I think it's a safe bet that they will one day do secret wars and that an avengers film will be out in one of the years you mentioned but it's important to note that Murphy is wrong way more than he is right and when he is right it is usually something anyone could guess like above
Origame
Origame - 6/7/2021, 4:48 PM
@BreakTheCode - no. I'm saying it's gonna essentially just be the name and feature the beyonder. Like how age of ultron ignored the actual plot of the story and just made an ultron story.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 6/7/2021, 5:14 PM
@Origame - i think they will but we won’t see it for YEARS
Origame
Origame - 6/7/2021, 5:36 PM
@BlackBeltJones - yeah. I wouldn't be surprised if it's the endgame of the new wave of films.

Only a matter of time at this point. Feige knows he can do pretty much anything with how technology is advancing so it's probably going to come down to where this all lines up in the story

There is no way of doing something of the scale like Hickman did, especially after the Quicksiler metajoke.
GwenLantern

@NathanielX - Where there's a will, there's a way.

Remember they have comics and TV to back them up. Unlike IW and Endgame, we will not have a drought of MCU content inbetween the films. If Secret Wars is two films, the first one ending with the death of the multiverse, the creation of Battleworld and Doom stealing the power of the Beyonder/s, then we could have a whole host of both Disney+ series and comics set on this new Battleworld. Can you imagine it? It would be immense!

It would even be bigger than what Hickman did.

I'm thinking this Multiversal War refers to the What If... show, because isn't there supposed to be a Guardians of the Multiverse in that?
