Today's episode of Secret Invasion began by offering a better look at the device Gravik's people have created to give themselves superpowers. From there, the villain wasted no time in explaining to his fellow council members that, when they unleash World War III, Earth's Mightiest Heroes will get involved.
It's because of that they need abilities of their own, and Gravik finally confirms they're all going to become "Super-Skrulls."
This marks the first time we've heard that moniker used in the MCU, and it's clear these abilities are ones Gravik intends to imbue all of his fellow shape-shifters with (those of you with a good memory will likely recall seeing a superpowered Gravik in one of Secret Invasion's trailers).
Last week, Gi'ah learned that her leader's Skrull scientists are experimenting with DNA they've retrieved from Groot, a Frost Beast, Cull Obsidian, and even the Extremis technology from Iron Man 3. We actually get to see the latter in action again in "Betrayed," and it's no joke!
After a tense meeting with Talos ends with Gravik being stabbed in the hand, the open wound heals itself thanks to Extremis. That alone should make him a force to be reckoned with - remember what it took to destroy Aldrich Killian? - but this feels like a mere tease of what's to come.
In the comic books, it was under the rule of Emperor Dorrek VII that Kl'rt became the first Super-Skrull. He was endowed with the powers of the Fantastic Four and sent to Earth to conquer it after Marvel's First Family thwarted their previous invasion attempt.
However, as the years passed, more Skrulls unleashed superpowered abilities, something we saw in the Secret Invasion event series. That's clearly where Marvel Studios is pulling inspiration from, though we'd be shocked if the Skrulls don't have even more powers than these to play with.
Are you excited to see the Super-Skrulls in action?
