If you shouted out "I knew it!" during Secret Invasion's closing moments today, you weren't alone.
In last week's episode, we saw an incredibly tense confrontation between Nick Fury and Rhodey which featured the latter acting somewhat out of character. Still, it was easy enough to see why he wasn't happy with the former S.H.I.E.L.D. Director, particularly as he now has an important role to play in the U.S. Government.
A role a Skrull imposter could do a lot of damage with.
Before we get to that, we know many of you picked up on the fact Rhodey called Fury "Nick," something we never hear in the MCU. In today's instalment, Fury points that out to Talos, explaining how he was able to figure out his friend was in trouble.
After Fury's confrontation with Rhodey, he collapsed distraught onto a bench, likely because he realised War Machine is now one of them. That's confirmed in "Betrayed" when his wife Priscilla - who appears to have joined Gravik's movement - goes and retrieves a gun and calls someone asking to speak to Gravik.
That someone is Rhodey, and while the conversation is brief, it confirms he's reporting to that villain and is obviously also a Skrull. Now, the Avenger may just be faking it, but we don't think so, and the fact he's been replaced would explain much of what we've heard about Armor Wars.
The question is how long Rhodey hasn't been himself. He was a key part of defeating Thanos in Avengers: Endgame, and it's possible the character in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier was the last time we saw the real deal.
The fact War Machine is a Skrull could be an absolute game-changer for the series and we'll be shocked if he doesn't eventually don that armour in an effort to take Fury down...
