Secret Invasion premieres on Disney+ tomorrow and, last week, we were in attendance for the show's global press conference.
It was a star-studded affair which assembled stars Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Don Cheadle, Ben Mendelsohn, Olivia Colman, Emilia Clarke, Kingsley Ben-Adir, director Ali Selim, and Marvel Studios executives Kevin Feige and Jonathan Schwartz.
During the event, we asked Jackson and Colman about the excitement that surrounds the fact they're going to finally share the screen as Nick Fury and Sonya Falsworth, respectively. Specifically, we wondered what they enjoyed about exploring the tense dynamic between the two characters.
"There's no tension," Jackson initially responded with a laugh. "The love scene is still in the [series]. We broke the ice. The first explicit love scene ever in the Marvel Universe."
While those in attendance broke into laughter, Colman interjected to add, "I'm not sure it made the final edit, though. I don't know. I can't really think about Fury and Sonya. I was just so excited to meet Samuel L. Jackson."
"They have a lovely friendship. Although, she does quite like to bully you with her heavies," she continued. "[It] doesn't strike me as much of a friendship, but they've got history. They trust each other, which is, I think, I mean, I'd say that...maybe they don't. [Laughs]"
To that, Jackson added, "As much as one spy can trust another spy, yeah..."
We're not going to get into spoilers, but these two are incredible on screen together and have a very exciting dynamic which promises to continue unfolding as the series plays out. As for whether Fury can trust Sonya...well, can he trust anyone in the show?
In our review of the first two episodes, we concluded by saying, "Secret Invasion is the MCU espionage thriller we’ve been waiting for. Samuel L. Jackson’s magnum opus as Nick Fury, the show delivers one jaw-dropping moment after another and quickly establishes itself as essential viewing for any Marvel fan."
Secret Invasion premieres on Disney+ on June 21.
