SHE-HULK Head Writer Explains Why The Abomination's Personality Has Changed Since THE INCREDIBLE HULK

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law Head Writer Jessica Gao addresses The Abomination's apparent personality transplant since we last saw him, explaining why and how The Incredible Hulk villain has changed so much.

While Phase 4 has definitely been a little hit-and-miss, there are those who seem to be taking great delight in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's recent inconsistency. It's also being used as an opportunity to jump on any little thing, such as the changes made to The Abomination since 2008's The Incredible Hulk.

That movie is far from beloved, but the fact that the Hulked-out Emil Blonsky now talks like Tim Roth in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is being treated like a travesty by some. The character's personality has also changed greatly since we last saw him attempt to kill Bruce Banner, though Head Writer Jessica Gao has now offered an explanation.

"I just thought... it would be really fun to pull this character, who was such an indelible part of Hulk lore, and pull him into this Hulk show," she tells Radio Times"But also to have fun with this character, because we saw him so long ago [and] we also saw him in such a serious capacity."

"It would be so nice to bring him in and actually make him have fun with it and actually let him play around with this character and show you kind of a different side, because there is that long span of time."

Gao adds, "Anything could have happened to this man over the course of the last 14 years. People change, especially if they've been sitting in a detention cell somewhere. We don't know what's happened all that time and people go through these kinds of changes after such a huge thing has happened to them – and then they've had to sit with it for over a decade."

This explanation makes perfect sense, as does Abomination evolving since we last saw him. Blonsky was always in control while transformed, so him becoming "Smart Abomination" isn't exactly a huge shocker. Visually, the villain has also changed, bringing him more in line with the comics (believe it or not, that's also proved to be problematic for some "fans").

We anticipate seeing much more of Emil both this Thursday and throughout the rest of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, so chances are we'll soon learn more about his new status quo.

How do you feel about the changes made to Abomination in the MCU?

Yes, it's called character development and it's amazing. He's great. If you still are the same person you were fifteen years ago something's really wrong with you. Really looking forward to see what his story will be like.

@braunermegda - him all of a sudden knowing how to talk whilst transformed is not character development.

@braunermegda - It’s only character development when you actually see the development of the character.
We did not.

@braunermegda -

This type of character development is the type of thing you typically only get in comics, because franchises rarely let longstanding characters develop and change radically like this unless they are the lead

One of Marvel's quietest strengths has been their willingness to let characters change, which is a huge reason that things still feel fresh after all this time

@braunermegda - except they didn't have the development part. This is the same logic as Luke Skywalker in the last jedi. Yes, he no doubt developed since the last time we saw him. But if you don't show the development he went through, then you've effectively replaced that character with an entirely new one for all the difference it makes.

I always loved Abomination in The Incredible Hulk. He didn't have a plan, or want revenge. He just wanted power to break stuff lol.

But yeah, it's great they brought him back as a seemingly changed man.

@KWilly -
But he started out as an aging soldier who was talked into being an experiment and ultimately got hosed and wound up getting his ass kicked by the Hulk and then tossed aside.

I mean I get it, it's not illogical. It's just not my favorite version of the character (so far). I prefer old Blonsky.
