WANDAVISION: Kevin Feige Credits THE MANDALORIAN For The Marvel Show's Weekly Release Schedule

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige reveals that there were talks about releasing every episode of WandaVision at the same time, while also commenting on how the length of each instalment will vary...

Do you ever get the feeling that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige saves a list of big reveals for press tours? He certainly dropped some noteworthy bombshells during the WandaVision junket this weekend, and now tells TV Line why the first of these TV shows set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe isn't dropping every episode at the same time.

That's commonplace for many Netflix TV shows, but Amazon bucked the trend with The Boys last year when the decision was made to release episodes weekly (in order to increase viewership and social media buzz over several weeks rather than a single weekend and a few days after).

For Marvel Studios, though, it was The Mandalorian which influenced this decision.

"We had discussions about [dropping the season all at once], but everybody at Disney+ had decided - and we very much agreed with - the notion of the fun of week-to-week. The Mandalorian has certainly proven this p there’s something fun to be able to follow along, to try to guess what happens next, to have a week speculating or rewatching and building that anticipation."

"Part of the fun, to me, of movies, is the anticipation leading up to it, so it’s fun to get to have a ‘mini-version’ of that every week," Feige continued. "And we did build the stories with that in mind, on all of our series. With that said, I think it’ll be another experience - an equally fun experience - to binge them once they’re all available."

The Marvel Studios boss also addressed the runtime of each WandaVision episode, indicating that once the series moves on from the sitcom setting, the length of each instalment might be a little longer (the first three instalments range between twenty and thirty minutes, give or take).

No, it's not that fun. I tried waiting for the Mandalorian so I could comfortably watch them all at my own leisure. But sites like this one make that impossible when they plaster images all over their front page of spoilers a matter of days after the episode airs.

I understood doing this when Disney+ was new, but I was hoping they would go back to streaming's binge drop. That way people have more control over how fast they want to watch it. I can't stand these weekly drops, it's more for marketing their product over a couple of months than it is about the customer's experience.

In a normal year, I might feel a little irritated having to wait week to week

But in a pandemic? Having the consistency from week to week of Mandalorian was really a nice steadying force in life, especially with it hitting essentially that Friday, which meant you could always have something to take you into the weekend. Plus, this way we finally find out what it's like to get the MCU year round, which for at least this year would be a nice treat.

I want a show that tries out a half-week format. Like a Sunday/Wednesday release schedule for example. That way we can have a breather and speculate, discuss and get excited, but without having to wait a whole week. I'm currently following Attack on Titan and the wait is killing me.

@Fares - That's what the Adam West Batman did that's why they were in some convoluted trap every other episode because the conclusion aired only a couple days later

"He certainly dropped some noteworthy bombshells during the WandaVision junket this weekend," and look at how many different stories I can make out of them.

I think Marvel may have done the impossible.

Elizabeth Olsen is amazing. She's talented, beautiful, funny, and sharp... but this show is actually making her look bad to me by holding her up to the standard of Mary Tyler Moore. And it's just not fair. Nobody can compare favorably to Mary Tyler Moore.

...I think I know what show I'll be watching in the week between WandaVision drops...

Cmon we all know it’s primarily down to subscription retention and very little else

@Ha1frican - no, it's a win-win. It gives people time to watch it without having to worry about spoilers, it lengthens the life of the show, builds anticipation, etc.

@Feralwookiee - I don't want a hint, I'm going to wait and watch the show when it starts, you know, on Friday.

I gotta say, I do like the weekly release schedule, even on a streaming service. It gives everyone a greater chance of watching each episode without spoilers.

With series dumps everything spoiler-wise is posted on the internet almost immediately so unless you either binge watch the entire series or completely shut yourself off from the internet then it's likely you'll have something spoiled for you. If a show is released weekly and you are watching it weekly then you are in the same boat as everyone else so you are less likely to have things spoiled unless you fall behind.

I only watch a few YouTube channels about a tv series. I know network tv doesn’t discuss these shows. So who is feeding them this mumbo jumbo of people discussing week to week. Sadly I don’t have a geek group. Usually tv conversation is a one and done. So those YouTube channels fill the gap. I prefer all at once. I’ve gotten good at avoiding tv spoilers. Plus if a show is really that great I won’t hesitate to rewatch it a few weeks later. Cobra Kai was the last show I went oh crap that was a fun watch and saw it again.
