Tomorrow's episode of What If...? will ask the question, "What If...The World Lost its Mightiest Heroes?" Very little has been revealed beyond that, but we can now confirm that Frank Grillo and Clark Gregg will reprise their respective roles as S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Brock Rumlow and Agent Coulson.
USA Today caught up with Grillo recently to ask about a possible MCU return: "They blew me up," he laughs, talking about his Captain America: Civil War fate. "They gave Anthony Mackie the shield!" Despite it being highly unlikely that Crossbones will somehow be resurrected, Grillo was quick to make it clear the door is always open. "Marvel is like the IRS...when they call, you pick up."
In a separate interview with Entertainment Weekly, Clark Gregg addressed his latest MCU return, and was asked about rumours he could show up as Agent Coulson again. Asked if he reads those reports, the actor responded, "Yes, I do. I follow it like an avid fan." However, he chose his next words carefully. "I've heard those rumors, that's the comment I can make. I've heard those rumors."
It sounds like both actors are open to potentially reprising their MCU roles beyond What If...?, but that decision will ultimately be down to Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige.
