WHAT IF...? Season 2 Finally Has A Confirmed Premiere Window And It's Returning To Disney+ THIS YEAR!

Over the past two years, we've endured delays and even rumours the show has been scrapped; now, though, Disney+ has finally revealed an official premiere window for What If...? season 2. Check it out...

The first season of What If...? was among the first Marvel Studios TV shows to arrive on Disney+ in 2021 and, based on comments from the creative team which were shared at the time, the plan had been for season 2 to follow in 2022.

Now, as we near the end of 2023, there's still no sign of the long-awaited follow-up to the well-received animated Multiverse series. Disney+, however, has just confirmed reports (via Toonado.com) that the show's second batch of episodes will drop "This Holiday Season."

That's all we have right now but the news was accompanied by a brief synopsis suggesting we'll hear more of that A-List voice cast.

The Watcher continues the journey as our guide through the vast multiverse, introducing brand-new and familiar faces throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The animated anthology series questions, revisits and twists classic Marvel Cinematic moments with an incredible voice cast that includes a host of stars who reprise their iconic roles

Earlier this Fall, a supposed list of What If...? season 2 episode titles was revealed. If accurate, it sounds like we're in for a fun ride.

• What If... Nebula Joined the Nova Corps?
• What If... Peter Quill Attacked Earth's Mightiest Heroes?
• What If... Kahhori Reshaped the World?
• What If... Hela found the Ten Rings?
• What If... lron Man Crashed into the Grandmaster?
• What If... Happy Hogan Saved Christmas?
• What If... Captain Carter Fought the Hydra Stomper?
• What If... The Avengers Assembled in 1602?
• What If... Strange Supreme Intervened?

There was a time when we believed the events of What If...? would impact the wider (read: live-action) Multiverse Saga. It's since become apparent that's not the case, with theories that Strange Supreme was in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ultimately proven to be incorrect.

Still, there's fun to be had with the premise, and it's widely believed that the animated series will run for a total of three seasons. As for what's led to this delay, it's likely a result of post-pandemic backlogs in animation.

"We got so many episode ideas, and Kevin [Feige] was like, 'Just gimme a list of like 30.' And then Kevin couldn’t even whittle it down," What If...? director Bryan Andrews previously said of his ambitious plans for the show. "Funnily enough, there were ideas that just kept staying around, so a couple of those ideas make it into Season 2, and then there's a few that might be showing up in Season 3."

"So many good ideas, so many fun ideas, some that were just way too crazy. They're just like, 'We're not ready for that yet.' So I think that’s why in Season 3, we'll see some of the crazy stuff that we were pitching out of the gate."

Are you excited for What If...?'s return this Holiday season?

The art style was fine....ish, aside from the dumb decision to give characters like Strange a permanent red nose and cheeks making him look like he had flu. The writing was absolute toilet bowl water, if it's the same team as before, I'll pass.

Well I guess releasing it during the holidays makes sense considering one of the episodes is "What If... Happy Hogan Saved Christmas". So, in that sense it's kinda like we're getting something of a Christmas Special Presentation. Just without Kevin Bacon (and who doesn't like Bacon during the holidays?). Then, again, you never know considering he is part of the MCU, so I guess he could show up anywhere, even in animated form. Wouldn't put it past them.

@StSteven - Out if all D+ content, I was really hoping the Halloween and Christmas specials would be annual. Those have been some of the best stuff they’ve produced for the streamer so far.

@mountainman - Oh I totally agree and I'm pretty sure that Marvel is very aware of their popularity, but I think that in their current effort to reduce their "content sprawl" they're trying to narrow the focus of their current and near-future content to focus on only an handful of story threads, with the Multiverse Saga being chief among them. So with that in mind, it's understandable that they would cut the holiday specials, as they were really outside of the main narratives going on (despite how much fun they were).

That being said, I have a lot of confidence that those SPs will return once Marvel gets their house in order creatively and content-wise due to their popularity, along with other occasional SPs.

Cool…

I enjoyed S1 (some stories more than others which tends to be the case with anthologies I guess) so I’m looking forward to this!!.

Can’t wait to see more Captain Carter but Hela one might be my most anticipated along with 1602!!.
