WHAT IF...? Star Michael Rooker Pays Tribute To Chadwick Boseman And Ponders Returning As The Animated Yondu

Guardians of the Galaxy star Michael Rooker has shared his thoughts on being part of Chadwick Boseman's What If...? episode, and teases a possible return to this animated world as Yondu. Check it out...

When Chadwick Boseman recorded his lines for What If...?, no one knew that would be his final time bringing life to the character. The actor tragically passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer, but his incredible performance as T'Challa/Star-Lord in the animated series certainly serves as a fitting tribute to the actor.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Yondu actor Michael Rooker opened up on what being part of the episode meant to him. While he never got to work directly with Boseman (it's rare voice actors share the same booth), The Suicide Squad star said, "It's just so wonderful, it's great stuff."

"I had no idea that it ended up being his last performance. Boy oh boy, what a shame. What a loss. It was terrible. But the work, the legacy of the work is there for everyone to see."

As for Yondu's dynamic with the new Star-Lord, he added: "Oh my goodness, their relationship is beautiful. This is an absolutely wonderful piece. This one, in particular, is beautiful. I think people are going to not just enjoy it, but also it's going to be meaningful in a lot of different levels."

Of course, we didn't expect to see more of Yondu after his death in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but could these alternate realities open the door to Rooker having a recurring presence?

"Well, I certainly hope it does. That would be a great "what if." [Laughs] I would jump on that bandwagon right away. It is a wonderful little niche in the armor to open it up and see what happened, what could happen," the actor said. "What if we told more of Yondu's story and the Ravagers? I bloody think the fans would go crazy over it. We've got our fingers crossed. We want more!"

There are a lot places Marvel Studios could go with Yondu, and it would be fun to see what became of him in a world where he didn't have a Star-Lord to put him back on the right track as a hero.

Can you think of any good "what if" stories for Yondu in this animated series?

Chadwick was so good and the chemistry & relationship with Yondu was a treat.

The second episode of What If…? was so much better than the first. T’Challa as Star-Lord was a lot of fun, and there were much bigger and more interesting changes to the MCU.

The episode and tribute to Chadwick Boseman got me choked up. He really gave a great final performance.

@mgeoff88 - It was pretty great. I find Tender Thanos and Buff Benicio quite unsettling however...

This episode way WAAAAAAAAAAAY better than episode 1 in pretty much every way. It was really cool that it gives you this unique insight into T'Challa's character in particular, that he's such an inherently good person and natural leader that this version of him manages to be such a force for good on a Galactic level when he steps into the shoes of Peter Quill.

I do think the pacing suffers slightly with the 30 min runtime though and they could do with maybe bumping it up slightly just to give the plot more room to breathe and avoid glossing over some of the bigger changes to the story.

@AC1 - well known that it was way better after the youtubers who saw the first 3 episodes. They said this was the best out of the 3.

Also the dedication at the end had me misty eyed, as did the T'Chaka hologram when he said something along the lines of how he'd "meet you [T'Challa] again on this plane or the next" given the real world significance 😢

I could tell Episode 1 was just easing in the audience. This episode really took the concept and ran with it.

It's going to be a little uneven, and each ep won't be to everyone's taste. I think that just comes with the anthology territory. It will be interesting to see how much they want to tie this all together.

Nebula’s nickname for T’Challa was great. Rest In Power Chadwick Boseman. Also Thanos still trying to convince us his plan aint genocide was great

My one complaint is they used Howard the Duck instead of giving Cosmo a comically over-the-top Russian accent. Completely missed opportunity.

This episode hit different, very entertaining! Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the first episode but it felt often boring in some spots. And it's more a retelling of TFA, with this episode there's a bit of retelling of the Guardians Vol.1 in the beginning but when the episode progresses it took a different approach and it worked.
