Today's episode of What If...? explores what would have happened had T'Challa been abducted by the Ravagers instead of Peter Quill. As Star-Lord, he managed to do a lot more good than his main MCU counterpart, but what happened to Peter following his mother's death and subsequent stay on Earth?
Well, in the final couple of seconds of this episode, we catch up with Peter dancing to some tunes and mopping the floor in a Dairy Queen. A customer enters who we quickly see is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 villain, Ego, who introduces himself as Peter's father as his eyes glow white. After that sequel, we know exactly what he's here for, and The Watcher warns that this could lead to the end of the world.
However, Uatu also notes that it's a story for another day, so we'd be willing to bet this is revisited in What If...?'s second season. Imagining what a Peter who never met Yondu would do after being granted those Celestial powers is definitely interesting, especially if he's spent decades angry about what happened to his mother and now has a chip on his shoulder.
It's possible this will factor into a season one episode, of course, but based on what's been revealed about the next seven instalments, we'd struggle to guess where that could fit in.
Chadwick Boseman is set to make at least a few more appearances in this first season, but if we were to revisit his world for this Peter Quill/Ego episode, his Star-Lord is now unlikely to be part of the proceedings. That definitely leaves us to wonder whether this story is one that should still be told, but as the writing process on season two continues, Marvel Studios might find a way to make it work.
