NBC To Air THE MUNSTERS Remake As A Halloween Special

Things look rather grim for NBC's remake of The Munsters, titled Mockingbird Lane, as last week Deadline reported that the show would probably not make it past the pilot stage.

According to the The Hollywood Reporter, NBC will unveil the pilot for "Mockingbird Lane." The plan is to air the pilot, which ws directed by Bryan Singer ("X-Men") as a Halloween special. No exact date has been specified at this moment.

While it is good news that people will be able to view Brian Fuller's version of The Munsters for the first time, it still doesn't feel very optimistic. Actually it feels like a hail mary, a last desperate attempt to see if the show can find an audience. Can't blame NBC for making the attempt as the show has already cost them a reported $10 million. Ouch!

The pilot, written by Bryan Fuller and to be directed by Bryan Singer, is described as a reinvention of the 1960s sitcom about The Munsters, a family of “monsters” — vampires, werewolves and Frankenstein, and their “plain” cousin (Charity Wakefield) — that will feature striking visuals in the vein of Fuller’s ABC dramedy Pushing Daisies. O’Connell will play family patriarch, the handsome and gangly Herman Munster, a great dad and devoted husband. He is married to Lily, a vampire, with whom he has fathered a 10-year-old boy, Eddie (Mason Cook). Strong but sentimental, Herman works at a funeral home, and worries that Eddie’s transformation into a werewolf and burgeoning awareness of his family’s origins will crush the boy’s spirit.

This show looks, and sounds like shit. It always seems like a lot of money is wasted on bad ideas. Why even air it? Let it die in peace.

The majority of Pilots never get seen so this is a positive for the series. Huge ratings could mean that more episodes will be ordered, but they would have to be massive. This is most likely NBC just airing this to get advertising money to recoup their losses a bit. Smart move by them.

Why even try? This is a massive floater that should've never been attempted. It had "crap" written on it by Day One. None of the actors resemble their characters and frankly making it edgier just depletes the purpose and doesn't retain any of the good old wholesome fun of the original. But Hollywood is stupid... look at "Dark Shadows" for example, "Starsky & Hutch", "Dukes of Hazzard", and others--- nothing like the originals.

Least Michael Mann's "Miami Vice" was somewhat like the original show, albeit could've used some humor. Joe Carnahan's "A-Team" and the new "Hawaii Five-O" are very much like the old show--- although in the "A-Team" no one killed anyone, but it retained what was fun and campy about those shows.

Hollywood just needs to leave things alone and let dogs lie. Hire some new writers. I'm one. Give me a chance.

this show could have possibly worked if it was presented as something new and completely different, rather than taking the names of beloved TV icons. That was its failure. Too many people know and love the original series, and will not accept seeing characters they know and love transformed into such ugliness.

Once again, some arrogant turd gets the brilliant idea to bring back great characters from the past and shit all over them, rather than understand what made the characters work in the first place and trying to recapture the magic. A true SITCOM showing the Munster family as we know and love them from the original series adapting to life in 2010 COULD be VERY funny. The basic formula would still work if there were any writers left with the talent to write a sitcom.

Boekelaar seems to he the only one in here who has any idea about the way networks do things. The fact that they have conference to show it means they like it. If you don't believe me, just look at shows like "Mercy Reef" or last years "Wonder Woman" debacle. You have to remember, this is more the type of show that one would expect to find in The CW or on a basic cable channel so I think the executives at NBC really doesn't know if they have an audience for something like this (though the success of Grimm might be helping it out). I'm sure, if it does well enough on a special airing - and I don't thin the ratings need to be amazing, they just need to show promise - then it could have a good shot at a mid-season pick up where it can either sink or swim.

If it were to get picked up, a Friday night timeslot, along with Grimm, would be the most logical move for NBC.
