RESIDENT EVIL TV Series Canceled At Netflix Following Disappointing Performance

Netflix has canceled Resident Evil, a live-action television show based on the popular video game series after its dwindling performance.

The Resident Evil franchise made the jump to live-action television with Netflix's Resident Evil. The show took place in two different time periods—2022 and 2036. The former dealt with the growing threat of the T-virus, while the latter was set in a post-apocalyptic environment where the virus decimated most of the world's population. Released on July 14, 2022, the series' first season consisted of eight episodes. Resident Evil was not received well critically—it earned 55% Tomatometer and 26% Audience scores—but its story was left open-ended in hopes of a continuation. Now, however, it's been revealed that the live-action adaptation is no more, as it's been canceled by Netflix.

Per DeadlineResident Evil scored promising viewership numbers in its first week, debuting at Number 2 in Netflix's Top 10 ranking (behind Stranger Things' fourth season) with 72.7 million hours watched globally, according to Netflix. Nielsen, on the other hand, tallied 14.3 hours watched in the United States. By its second week, though, the show had dropped to Number 3 with Netflix's reported 73.2 million hours worldwide and Nielsen's 12.8 million in the U.S. This was followed by it being taken off the Top 10 ranking altogether following a 62% drop in viewership (via The Hollywood Reporter)—this after only its third week of release.

The news came around the time that Netflix's success metrics were discussed on social media. As Death on the Nile and Jungle Cruise writer Michael Green revealed on Twitter, the streamer does not really count a viewer consuming a show over a period longer than 28 days (The Sandman writer Neil Gaiman similarly estimated that number to be between 28 and 30):

Admittedly, Netflix's mentality regarding content popularity may not have necessarily played a factor in canceling the series, as Resident Evil did fall out of the Top 10 rankings shortly after its release. It is, however, a possibility given the fact that the show was released only a little over a month ago, which is only slightly longer than the time frame Green revealed Netflix used to measure a project's success.

The Ambitious Potential Future Of Resident Evil

The series' showrunner, Andrew Dabb (Supernatural), had an ambitious plan in mind for Resident Evil's future chapters. As he explained to Comicbook.com, the show was set within the canon of the Resident Evil video games, and its creative team was going to gradually pull from their mythology as the seasons progressed:

"The games are our backstory. Everything that happened in the games exists in this world. So, the village is there. We might not get there till Season 5, but it is in our world, we can play with those [as] we're now moving ahead. [...] The village is a resource we draw on. [...] [Everything] in the games is the backstory for the show. [But] we're doling it out in pieces. We're not being like, episode three, 'Meet the Redfields,' episode four, 'Here's Leon.' And I'm sure there's a certain part of the fan base that [would] be like, 'Please do that version.' But for us, it was more important [to take] you on this journey. And then, as the journey goes on and on, we will touch on different quarters and aspects of the mythology."

Dabb also explained in an interview with Polygon that he was looking forward to introducing characters like Lady Dimitrescu from Resident Evil Village into the series, but that he planned to do so over a long span of time: "Over the course of the series, I want to bring everything in. [...] Left to my own devices, I want Lady [Dimitrescu], I want the plant monster, I want it all. I want everything, but judiciously [and] responsibly over time."

The franchise's live-action future now remains uncertain. The 2021 film Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City premiered to not-ideal box office and critical results, earning $38 million worldwide against a reported $25 million budget, and garnering a 30% Tomatometer score. Actor Tom Hopper, who played Albert Wesker in the movie, told Screen Rant in June 2022 that the chances of a sequel were optimistic given its on-demand popularity.

Considering there have been no subsequent announcements on the project and Resident Evil's Netflix cancelation, though, it seems that the franchise's live-action efforts are being paused for the time being.

strange, how nothing's topped the first one.

@Biggums - I saw the first one in theaters when my brother came to visit me at Arizona State. We ate pit brownies, and the only thing I could remember about it was that I didn’t like it. It was an action movie with none of the atmosphere and creepiness of the game. I hate Paul W.S. Anderson and think he’s a hack. I’m also jealous he’s married to such a fox.

That said. Sadly, you’re right. 🍻

@Biggums - I do kinda love that James Cameron holds that movie as a guilty pleasure. That’s awesome.

@Biggums - I remember going to the theaters on the night it opened so excited to see this game I had so much fun playing when it first came out, then walking out after it was over wanting to find Paul W.S. Anderson & scream at him for destroying such a perfect story & replacing it with his wife & Alice. Terrible franchise that lasted forever it seemed like & everything that’s been released since has been as bad too. I honestly would rather watch the cut scenes from the first game then any live action trash Hollywood has tried to feed us

@Mercwitham0uth - it was only Resident Evil in name only. You had Wesker and Raccoon City, everything else was it’s own thing. I think this show started out as something else and had certain scenes reshot to turn it into RE.

@WruceBayne - Pretty much. I binged the series with some friends. We Mercilessly made fun of how awful it was. One of my friends is a massive fan of the games and he saw this show as just as REINO show.

they messed up Cowboy Bebop and Resident Evil, which didnt have their creator's involved (bebop's creator was quite critical)

they nailed Sandman with the creator

loosing hope for avatar considering they had the creators then fired the creators
EZBeast
EZBeast - 8/28/2022, 10:24 PM
@dracula - 1 was an anime which is not now and never meant to be in live action which is why ever live action anime adaption will fail. The other is a video game that has already proven to have a difficult track record of being adapted to live action and it’s probably time they take a break from that property.

Sandman was a comic and those have a much easier chance of being adapted well as there is more creative freedom (dc, marvel, etc) and while not all succeed there was a great chance of sandman being good compared to the others.

@dracula - “loosing hope for avatar considering they had the creators then fired the creators”. This always baffled me. Why fire the guys that created the reason we wanted a live action version in the first place.
dracula
dracula - 8/28/2022, 11:13 PM
@WruceBayne - at least out of that is coming the return of animated avatar

Weird how that works

M Night didnt listen to them, then we got Legend Of Korra

Netflix didnt listen to them, now we are getting animated movies and a third series

One more crappy live action project with them being ignored and they will complete the avatar cycle

Maybe after that they will do non avatar stuff. After Korra they said they would be doing their own separate projects for a while but cant think of anything they put out on their own. I remember something from one about rabbit people, either a show or a comic
dracula
dracula - 8/28/2022, 11:18 PM
@TheFireForce - you can say the same about avatar. Really resident evil shouldnt be that hard. You know at one poin George A Romero was going to write and direct the movie. Supposedly his script was too expensive to make.

Sandman worked because Gaiman stuck to his guns and maintained control of his creation. No wonder it took so long to find a version he was happy with. For sure a property that could go off the rails
Beerus
Beerus - 8/29/2022, 12:31 AM
@dracula - Same situation with the Dragon Ball franchise... We probably wouldn't have had new DB (animated) movies or even the return of the series with Dragon Ball Super if Hollywood also didn't ignore Akira Toriyama when it came to their failed attempt at a live action adaptation.

TheSuperMex

@TheFireForce - Alita and Rurouni Kenshin were great anime adaptations. There are several others. If American comics can be done so can manga/anime. Sonic and Detective Pikachu proved video game movies being is possible.

The show was bad and I watched the whole series thinking it would get better, but no it got worse.

Maybe next time follow the video games instead.

Santanaonfire - 8/28/2022, 10:24 PM
I tried to watch it, stalled at 3 episodes and would have completely forgotten about it, if it didn’t keep show up on my “continue watching” thread. Even then, still can’t quite bring myself to pick it up again. Now there’s no point.

Even though I heard bad things, still want to see Welcome to Raccoon City. Just w waiting for streaming prices to come down on it. Last I looked it was still purchase only for $15 - $20 or something like that.

The Billie Eillish attitude teens were unbearable and while the show had its moments and things it used from the games, it just did other things poorly.

Shocking that Netflix canceled a show after the first season. Sounds like it might be appropriate with this one point though. Sometimes shows having breathing room pays off though although maybe I am thinking old school and network TV. Parks and Rec didn’t really take find it’s rhythm and it’s audience until season 2 and that was a great show.

This isn’t about Resident Evil per se but it is very irritating that in the world of streaming how many people watch a show is no longer the most important metric to it’s value to a streaming service.
