Netflix and video game developer Telltale Games have both confirmed reports that they are collaborating on a new game based around the hit sci-fi series
Stranger Things. Netflix responded to TechRadar, confirming the project, but also clarifying it will not actually be featured on the Netflix service.
"The Stranger Things project is being published by Telltale at a later date, not on the Netflix service," the company said.
"It's part of our marketing and title promotion efforts."
It seems in recent weeks, Netflix has made some steps to expand upon the lore of
Stranger Things in order to reach a larger audience in different formats. Last week, it was reported that
Netflix partnered with Penguin Random House for a worldwide deal to publish a series of books inspired by the series; one of which will be a prequel novel about Eleven's mother and the MKUltra program.
Telltale, who is known for developing interactive adventure games based on popular franchises (like
The Walking Dead and
Game of Thrones) responded separately to the report, issuing their own statement on Twitter.
Telltale typically releases their series as episodic adventures, usually consisting of five episodes in a season. Usually, they tell their own original stories featuring new characters, so expect the game to expand upon the lore of
Stranger Things.
As for the actual
Stranger Things show, it's expected to return for its third season on Netflix sometime in 2019.
Production on the upcoming season began in April.
