RUMOR MILL: CASSIAN ANDOR Will Feature An Appearance From Iconic STAR WARS Baddie Grand Moff Tarkin

The Cassian Andor show coming to Disney+ takes place between the events of Revenge of the Sith and Rogue One, and a new rumor claims Grand Moff Tarkin will have a role to play in the spinoff series!

With Rogue One: A Star Wars Story set almost immediately before the events of A New Hope, it wasn't too shocking when characters like Darth Vader, Grand Moff Tarkin, and Princess Leia all appeared. Visual effects were used to bring the latter two back from the dead (both Peter Cushing and Carrie Fisher had passed away by this point), though that did prove to be a tad controversial.

It's hard to believe an actor like Cushing would be happy with the way he was recreated on screen with a mixture of VFX and stand-in Guy Henry, and the results were far from flawless.

The Cassian Andor series coming to Disney+ takes place before we find the titular Rebel in Rogue One, and during a recent episode of Kessel Run Radio, hosts Corey Van Dyke and Noah Outlaw of Kessel Run Transmissions revealed that Tarkin will have a role to play in the hero's show.

They failed to elaborate on whether VFX will once again be used to create Cushing's likeness, but with parts of Cassian Andor expected to take place during the character's childhood, it's feasible another actor could fill the role with make-up doing the job of transforming his appearance. Ultimately, it will depend where in the Star Wars timeline the villain's scenes take place.

With coronavirus (COVID-19) potentially delaying production, it could be some time before anything official is announced, but this definitely gives Star Wars fans something to mull over.

The effects were ok.. still had that uncanny valley effect, the dead eyes and the mouth gave it away.

@BigMikeReviews - The vfx for Tarkin was great! If you pause at any frame, you couldn't tell he was a CGI character. But like you said, it's imperfect, thus we as humans are quick to recognize the faults in it. The technology is always improving, and Rogue One was a learning opportunity for what they can do next to make it look better.

Also apologies if it appears as if this reads as an attack, it's honestly not meant to be. I just feel like the description of it being ok really underplays all the amazing things they got right about CGI Tarkin

@Deonox - Oh I don't read it as an attack good sir, not to worry! I acknowledge all the work they put into recreating the likeness of the actor it's quite impressive, but to contrast to real actors in the same frame, it sort of took me out of the movie because it served more as a distraction than anything. Honestly it would have been more effective if they'd have just cast different actor in the role.

I mean, i could tell he was cg, obviously, but pretty much all of friends though i was lying when i told them. So i guess most people were fooled and it did the trick.

Great opportunity to perhaps flesh out Tarkin greater and move him out of Bad Guy wearing a black hat label.

Not to be picky, but Carrie Fisher was not dead when this movie released.

"both Peter Cushing and Carrie Fisher had passed away by this point"

An inaccurate statement. Carrie Fisher was very much alive when this movie was made and did not pass away until a couple of weeks after it was released.

"It's hard to believe an actor like Cushing would be happy with the way he was recreated on screen with a mixture of VFX and stand-in Guy Henry"

An assumption based on what? Carrie Fisher saw the Leia scene before she died and supposedly had no problem with it, so there's no reason to believe Cushing would have had a problem. There's no reason to believe he would have liked it either, of course, but because there's no reason to believe either way, the above statement seems very presumptuous.

A quote from Gareth Edwards about Carrie Fisher's reaction to the Leia scene -

"We had about two weeks left, and Kathy went around her house and everyone was waiting to hear. [Kathy] said she showed it to her and [Carrie] thought it was footage. She didn’t realize it was CGI. She thought we had some footage. She didn’t remember the take and thought we had manipulated a take from the original film. But they told her it was all computer generated and she was really impressed. We were all just so pleased she approved it."

A quick Google search of "carrie fisher rogue one reaction" will show a bunch of websites with that quote.

I'm not saying anyone is wrong or right for not liking the visual effects that inserted Tarkin and Leia into Rogue One. That's a matter of opinion. But it frustrates me at times to see inaccurate statements, assumptions and/or opinions reported as if they're facts in some of the articles on this site. Statements such as the first quoted one above, which, while entirely unnecessary, would at least be better rephrased as something like, "We'll never know whether Cushing would have been happy with the way he was recreated on screen with a mixture of VFX and stand-in Guy Henry, but the results were met with a mixed reaction." And the statement about Carrie Fisher being dead when Rogue One was made/released is just definitively wrong.

But anyway, those are just my two cents on how this article is constructed.

Please just recast the character if you absolutely have to include this [frick]ing character again. CGI'ing dead actors in the name of fan service is just so creepy and shouldn't happen.

Go back to prosthetic's like Lucas used in Ep 3. Maybe enhance it a bit with CGI for certain shots, but it works much better than going full CGI.

It was pretty amazing what they managed to do, but I don't know if I want to see him or this type of technology return. If they start using this more often without very good reason, I'm afraid using likeness from the dead will become mainstream very quickly

Ugh, let’s not make CGIing corpses a trend. It’s macabre.
