OBI-WAN KENOBI Writer Joby Harold Weighs In On The Grand Inquisitor's Unexpected Fate - SPOILERS

Obi-Wan Kenobi delivered a big surprise in its second episode when Reva crossed paths with The Grand Inquisitor, and that's now been addressed by the show's writer, Joby Harold. Find more details here...

At the end of Obi-Wan Kenobi's second episode, Reva decided not to share the credit for capturing the titular Jedi Master and plunged her lightsaber through The Grand Inquisitor's stomach. Considering a similar injury killed Qui-Gon Jinn once upon a time, fans understandably assumed that the villain was done for.

This would contradict what we saw in Star Wars Rebels, as the animated series (which is set after this show) depicted The Grand Inquisitor's demise when he chose death over facing Darth Vader's wrath. So, has Obi-Wan Kenobi broken canon?

Here's an excerpt from Vanity Fair's recent interview (via SFFGazette.com) with Head Writer Joby Harold:

In Episode Two, Reva drives her lightsaber into her superior, the Grand Inquisitor. Yet we saw him meet his end a different way in the animated Rebels show. Is there a break in canon there?

As you know, we would never break canon. So, that's all I'll say. [Laughs.] Canon is everything

So fans should wait to see where that's going before judging it as a mistake or a retcon?

I can't speak to it beyond that. We all know where we're going in the show [from previous films and TV shows] so anytime you can undercut that, pull the rug on that, have a reversal...

In other words, it sounds like this was, as expected, a deliberate misdirect to get fans talking. Taking The Grand Inquisitor off the table allows Reva to shine, and we're sure that the villain will make a surprise return after managing to survive his injury. Plus, it's worth noting that no one has actually said he's dead...at least not outright!

What did you think about Obi-Wan Kenobi's Grand Inquisitor twist?

He's obviously not dead, if Cobb Vanth can get a Bacta treatment after being wrecked in TBOBF the Grand Inquisitor is going to get that treatment as well.

Reva is going to be persona non-grata soon enough among the empire, she's probably going to turn good after seeing herself in Leia and either dies or goes on the run only to be chased by the Grand Inquisitor in a personal quest.

@bobevanz - Everyone with a brain was capable of figuring out that he wasn't really dead since we know he'll survive to Rebels. That's not "subverting expectations", that's expecting you to be smart enough to get that on your own. But yeah, I guess that was a mistake.

@BO31 - I have always found it odd when a man or even a women take out their partner's infidelity on the mistress. As if 100% of the blame falls on only the mistress and not the actual partner. Dude should be mad at his chick and leave her instead of getting charges pressed against him and ruining his life for someone who cheated on him. Not justifying you for doing your dirt with her but you are not to blame.

@SonOfAGif - THIIIIIIISS!!

My sentements as well. It's never made sense to me either. And all it does is encourage the crooked partner to continue this behavior if the blame is shifted.

A little nervous still😂😂 sitting here on a off day waiting to see if i get jumped.
[frick]ER WAS AT MY HOUSE YO!!

@BO31 - I have a friend who used to get a thrill off of smashing women who were either married or in a relationship. At first I was upset that he was a home wrecker but then it dawned on me that I as his friend placed 100% of the blame on him when in fact the women who entertained it were 100% at fault. Ironically he got married to a woman who cheated on him with two of his best friends. It was poetic Karma but he didn't go after the guys, he cut them off completely and divorced her. Now he doesn't entertain entanglements.

I tire of bad writers inserting obscure twists or shocking moments for no reason just to undo them a few episodes later.

See also Luke Skywalker returning in The Mandalorian and taking Grogu only to undo that and make it meaningless a few episodes into Boba Fett.

cbm.com is not like what it used to be. Now every time I look into the comments it's a bunch of pathetic users bitching all the time.

@MrKeyzerSoze - this comment is ironic. You are literally bitching about people bitching. At least others are on topic and expressing opinions about the content of the article. You are simply whining there aren't more people with your same opinions. Trust me, your team will be in here soon enough to insult and lash out at the people they disagree with. Don't you worry.

@MrKeyzerSoze - I feel like cbm.com has always had a healthy amount of bitching but it's really deteriorated into *obsessive* bitching, to the point where it becomes a lot of people's sole or primary personality trait. When someone's whole personality is built around bitching, they have to keep consuming and following the media they've decided to bitch about.

I remember trying to watch CW shows for awhile until I just couldn't handle it anymore, but you'll never see me commenting on every Flash article because I just don't care anymore (ditto for half the animated Star Wars stuff) Conversely, I've lost count of the people who have been complaining constantly about the new Star Wars show/movie being "garbage" or "fanfic", only to watch every new movie opening weekend and every episode Wednesday morning. As is typically the case, this is because most people know they won't be able to complain if they aren't up to date, so they keep watching due to a mix of FOMO and a need to feel like they're part of the discussion. It's bitching due to a fear of loneliness when you really boil it down. Look no further than all the people who performatively claimed they were canceling Disney+ in response to some random political silliness only to continue complaining about the latest Disney+ show a few months later. Being constantly online is becoming more and more of a disease.

I can't wait for all the people who spent a year saying they had no interest in Ms Marvel to conveniently decide out of the blue to "give it a chance" so they can bitch about each episode every week.

UGLYsonic - 6/5/2022, 11:10 AM
@OmegaDaGrodd - you are correct, the site has always had bitching. But it also had users with thicker skin who didn't police others and insult users for sharing negative opinions. Instead, we argued endlessly about the topic, and shit got heated and sometimes rivalries were created, but it was always a chess game of who could argue their points better.

Now, people don't argue the topics, they go straight to calling people whiners and say they are bitching, and endlessly complain about how the sites going to hell... instead of engaging in discussions about the topic.

You are correct, the site is full of people bitching these days....
