THE MANDALORIAN Behind The Scenes Stills Reveal Mark Hamill DID Shoot Scenes With Grogu As Luke Skywalker

Last month, Lucasfilm announced that a new episode of Disney Gallery: Star Wars: The Mandalorian will arrive on Disney+ on August 25. That's set to focus on the season two finale, an epic chapter we're sure you'll all remember featured the return of Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker for a jaw-dropping battle against Moff Gideon's Dark Troopers.

In many ways, it redeemed the character after his underwhelming role in the Star Wars sequels, and while we know visual effects were used to bring the actor back to his most famous role, it turns out he was actually on set as well.

As you can see in the images below, Hamill donned his cloak from Return of the Jedi to shoot those scenes with Grogu, and this must have felt like a really special moment for him (the actor has never shied away from expressing his disappointment with Luke's portrayal in the sequels since their release).

It's going to be fascinating to watch this making-of special for Peyton Reed's season finale of The Mandalorian, and it's easy to see why Disney+ saved it for this extra Disney Gallery episode. Hopefully, we'll hear more from Hamill on what it meant to him to step back into the role at a time when Luke was at the height of his power as a Jedi Knight.

As noted, this episode of Disney Gallery: Star Wars: The Mandalorian hits Disney+ on August 25.

@dragon316 - Probably not that much, his acting career was never as big as Harrison Ford. It cost 1-2 mil per new film so it probably cost less or the same for Mandalorian. Mandalorian has a budget of 12.5+ mil per episode so they can afford it.

What cost more is that de-age technology that didn't even look as good as the movies lol.

Although it was probably more for reference and not that what we got in the finale of the season, it does bring me joy that Hamill got to return as the Jedi Luke physically too.

Let’s hope Luke gets more than a cameo in one of the new series.

The real Luke Skywalker. The man who would lay down his life for this young Yoda look-a-like despite never knowing him prior. The Luke who left his post to heed the call of some random young Force user from some distant planet. The Luke who believes “but he must be trained”. The Luke who wouldn’t ever abandon his friends and family.

@McMurdo - Amen. It's a tiny consolation.

Wow, and they still managed to [frick] it up. I love this show but it should have took place farther down the timeline. It already makes no sense why Boba Fett is 20-25 years older than he's supposed to be, so why not just make it that many years past RotJ? It would have allowed them to use the real Mark Hamill as Luke and just de-age him a little instead of going full PS5 graphics.
