There's a lot of uncertainty surrounding the future of the Star Wars franchise on the big screen, but things are looking a little brighter on the TV side of things thanks to Disney+. Next year will see the launch of Obi-Wan Kenobi, for example, a series we know is going to reunite actors Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen for an Obi-Wan vs. Darth Vader rematch.
During a recent interview with Empire Online, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy teased the "emotional" moment the two actors were finally brought back together on the show's set.
"The thing that was most exciting was being on the set and watching the two of them get excited," Kennedy recalls. "They hadn’t seen one another in a long time. I was surprised at just how incredibly emotional it was for each of them to find themselves back in these roles, and just realising how important Star Wars was to each of them. It was the beginning of their careers."
It's going to be very exciting to see what Obi-Wan Kenobi delivers with this meeting between the two actors, and if the concept art above is anything to go by, it's going to be beyond epic.
Elsewhere in the interview, Kennedy was asked if the characters from the Star Wars sequels have a future beyond 2019's The Rise of Skywalker. While nothing has been announced, it sounds like there could be something in the works. "Certainly, those are not characters we’re going to forget," she teased, referring to the likes of Rey and Finn. "They will live on, and those are conversations that are going on with the creative team as well."
It's possible Kevin Feige or Taika Waititi's Star Wars movies will revisit those sequel characters, but regardless of what the current plan is, there are definitely more stories for Lucasfilm to tell with the new trilogy's heroes. After all, Emperor Palpatine may have been defeated, but we still don't know what became of Rey after she dubbed herself a "Skywalker" or whether Finn admitted to being Force-sensitive.
