News broke last month that The CW had decided to go back to the drawing board with the Powerpuff pilot, and the script for the current interpretation leaked online shortly after, making it pretty clear why the show needed to be reworked.
The CW Chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz later explained why they felt they needed to take another pass at the material, claiming that the pilot suffered from tonal inconsistencies and came across a little "too campy." Now, one of the show's leads has weighed in.
"I can't speak on it yet because they are still changing. Such a funny thing," Bubbles actress Dove Cameron tells ET Online. "They didn't decide to rework the pilot because the script leaked. I just need to say that that wasn't what happened. We had to reshoot it anyway for a couple of reasons."
The script only leaked after the announcement that the show would not be moving forward, but some remain convinced that it factored into The CW's decision. Cameron would go on to outline the real reason the original pilot was scrapped.
"It's a really big piece of IP, and it's tonally very specific. Like getting it right, making everybody happy, and also making sure that it translates. It's so specific," she said. "To modernize it and to make it fit like, a bunch of different things that don't normally go together, it's just kind of like a puzzle piece. So we're removing some elements and we're replacing others. I think the script is going to get another whack, and it's just going to be a slightly different approach but everything else is going to stay the same."
Cameron is expected to return along with Chloe Bennet, Yana Perrault, Donald Faison and the rest of the main cast for whatever this new (hopefully much-improved) take on Powerpuff turns out to be, though the show is still not guaranteed to move forward.
