In an alternate timeline, we'd be just over a month away from the series finale of Supernatural, but unfortunately due to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic, production on the final two episodes of the long-running series has been halted and the final seven episodes have all been postponed indefinitely.

While it's not entirely clear when fans may get their chance to bid farewell to the Winchesters, Entertainment Weekly was able to get in a proper goodbye last August when they got together with Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins for the stars' final EW cover shoot.

Despite the series often feeling like it could realistically go on forever, talks of a proper ending began at least three seasons ago, but it wasn't until just last year that the longtime co-stars and real-life friends decided season fifteen would be their final ride.

Ackles explains, "[Jared] and I were always married to the fact that we never wanted to go out with a diet version of what we had We wanted to have enough gas left in the tank to get us racing across the finish line. We didn’t want to limp across... It just kind of came together, so Jared and I sat down with Andrew and [co-showrunner] Bob [Singer] and talked about what it could look like and what were the different scenarios, and this one seemed like the best one."

Collins adds, "We were in the end zone, and Andrew gave the rationale of, 'We can stretch this to two or three years or we could go out with one really great final season,' and that sounded like a really good note to end on and I think that's ultimately what Jared and Jensen rallied around."

The twenty-episode fifteenth and final season was formally announced in late March of last year, midway through production on season 14, and while it may have been official from that moment on, it still didn't stop the boys from having their reservations about bringing the series to an end.

"We had that moment where he and I both realized that we didn’t want it to end. It finally got to a point, ironically, where it was like, 'I never want to leave this. I could do this until the day I die, and then if I get the choice when I’m dead, I’ll re-up!' But you never want to be the last person at a party. We just knew. That’s not to say there haven’t been vacillations, but we all trust the decision that was made."

@Battabing - looks better than their usual fare. Why didn't they call this JSA?

@SmokingMan - More importantly, why are the cinematic JSA being relegated to Dwayne Johnson's vanity project? Sigh...

@tmp3 - Don't even get me started. In a perfect world, a JSA movie would be amazing and if they had to fight the ancient Teth Adam, it would be the conflict, not the story. But, the Rock is in charge...for some reason

Im well into my re-watch at the moment, just about to start the Season 10 finale (damn I forgot how meh 10 is...didnt do justice to the Dean-mon storyline, a whole season of trying to take the Mark from Dean...and going behind his back to do it...I know its a character building season, but it is mostly not good on re-watch)...and watching it again, I do love most of the show, mostly thanks to the great work of Jensen, Jared, Misha and Mark

but it does suffer from 3 main problems due to its long running status: killing a LOT of female characters (I mean Castiel can com back 60 times, but get a little sister-type character...bam dead)
repeating the same damn stories over and over (I mean how many times can the brothers betray each other, fight with each other, not trust each other and then ultimately sacrifice themselves for each other before you start to think, damn enough with the rinse and repeat)
and of course, death means nothing, if it wasnt for the brothers being so damn entertaining, I shouldnt really give a crap about them if they keep being brought back from the dead

As it has been said so many times, the first 5 seasons are the perfect run of the show, but there are good things to be said about some of the story arcs and particular episodes over the next 10 seasons...but I for one am glad its coming to an end, as long as they can stick the landing (I honestly hope, Sam and Dean end up in charge of heaven and hell, so ultimately they become the new cornerstones of existence...and once week a year, they ride around Baby and enjoy that long-anticipated holiday at the beach they always wanted) :)

I love the show. I hate that it's ending but it's time for sure. There really isn't anything left for them to tell, without repeating something that's already been repeated. lol

I agree, the ONLY way to end this is for 1 to be in charge of Heaven, and the other in charge of Hell. Pretty sure that's been the destiny from the beginning. I hope it doesn't end with them getting their new roles and roll credits though. I'd like to see a small montage of them actually running things and getting things back in order with zero dialogue and the Theme song playing, then just fades to black. Have all the familiar faces for each side with them taking orders and helping them out. Proper ending to let everyone know what's yet to come, without it having to happen onscreen.
