VENOM 2 Expected To Get A New Screenwriter But Will SPIDER-MAN Make An Appearance?

Venom co-writer Jeff Pinker has confirmed that a sequel is officially in the works, but it sounds like Sony may be taking things in a slightly different direction. Find out more from him after the jump...

Venom massively exceeded expectations at the box office this year and a sequel has already been pencilled in for 2020 (Sony hasn't made that 100% official but an "Untitled Marvel Sequel" has been slotted in for the October and there's really nothing else it could be).

Now, Venom co-writer Jeff Pinker has confirmed that a follow-up is happening but it seems like he won't be the one who writes it. "I can’t say anything other than that it is happening," he explained before being asked if he'll be working on the next chapter: "I am not. As of right now, I am not."

Seeing as Venom was torn apart by critics, it makes sense that Sony will take things in a slightly different direction from a creative standpoint. After all, the bad reviews may not have hurt the movie financially, but a well-received follow-up could see it pass $1 billion if word of mouth is overwhelmingly positive.

Regardless, when Pinker was asked if Spider-Man exists in the same world as Venom, he teased: "Without revealing anything that I’m not allowed to reveal, it is not impossible that in a future/upcoming Venom movie, Spider-Man will play a significant role."

We heard that a lot before the first instalment was released and there was no sign of the wall-crawler so, for now, we should probably just expect to see the symbiote take on Carnage!

Cut off the bs. You did the same thing with the first movie and played coy with an mcu connection to deceive people.

Those shady tactics really get into my netves. They should change director before writer btw.

Just set it in this universe.

If Sony screws this up, it may be a LOOOOOOONG time before we get to see Venom done properly, even if all the rights do revert back to Marvel.

Just like how we have little chance of seeing the Green Goblin or Doc Ock in the MCU. Here's hoping, though! And for God's sake, BRING BACK J. JONAH JAMESON.

@KingJoffrey - Sony has already screwed Venom up and we'll NEVER see Venom done properly now. Still can't believe so many people actually gave money to see this happen.

@DoubleD - It’s worth noting that Venom’s wonderful financial results are largely due to China, where it’s earned more than $260m of its total, so there is plenty of room for box office improvement. Hell, in the US it still hasn’t passed “Solo: A Star Wars Story”.

@Chewtoy - it hasn't passed solo domestically, but solo is a much more recognizable character to casual movie fans. solo also had a much bigger budget, so its greater domestic gross means it was a failure. and going by the rule of thumb, even without the China gross, Venom was still profitable internationally. hard to deny it was a colossal financial success, even if it was god awful.

I’m sure Spidey vs Venom is a possibility down the line but I highly HIGHLY doubt they blow their entire load in Venom 2, that’s something you have to tease and build towards if you actually want the maximum impact (and financial reward).

@TheUnworthyThor - This is Sony Movie Studios they are known to unload a load before they unloaded.

I mean, they would have to make up a LOT of BS to make Spidey vs Venom meaningful.

Going off the Venom film there's literally no reason for Brock and the Symbiote to hate Peter and Spider-Man.

@CorndogBurglar - exactly, just keep our beloved Spidey out of your family friendly Venom crap.
