Production is about to get underway on Sony's Venom movie, and the studio has launched an official Twitter page so fans can keep up with all the new development. Does this mean we'll soon be getting our first glimpse of Tom Hardy as the titular antihero? Give 'em a follow to find out.

We still don't have any solid information on the plot of Venom, but there are plenty of rumors doing the rounds. The latest suggests that the Spidey spinoff will be based on the Lethal Protector comic book arc, which saw a group of mercenaries hunting Eddie Brock after he relocates to San Francisco.

One thing we do know for sure is that director Ruben Fleischer has assembled a hell of a cast, which also includes Michelle Williams and Riz Ahmed.

Venom is set to hit theatres on October 3, 2018.

Do the mercenaries have speakers? Just play some dubstep & you defeat Venom

Venom is one of my favourite characters, and the cast for this is genuinely excellent.
But god damn, I don't think I can get over the idea of having a Spider-Man without Venom, and a Venom without Spider-Man.
They're too interlinked.

@DentonKnight - you can have spiderman without venom, but venom without spiderman is just dumb

@Ha1frican - mark my words. They'll be linked; screw all claims as to the contrary.
Mind you, same was said of spiderman years back.
And Hardy's too big a talent for Marvel not to go all out for (imo).

Still can' believe this is happening without Spiderman

I'm not completely giving up on this movie. This could be really good. I'm just confused how this'll work without Spider-Man.

I mean, it's got a good cast so far. But it's Sony. But they just had BR 2049. But it's a Sony comic book movie.

Ugh. So torn.

This could either be decent or meh.

A Venom movie without Spiderman is like having bread without butter.

Serious question does any one think this will work out well with out the spider-man connection?
GhostDog
GhostDog - 10/19/2017, 8:47 AM
@pitbull76 - its weird.

Sure, it could "work" in some way. They could act like there's no connection but you'd still notice that "something" missing. Like there's a void or a missing puzzle piece.

Since he has the same abilities but lacks a moral compass, he’s essentially the wall-crawler’s Bizarro. As such, it’s hard to imagine a standalone movie that doesn’t have Spider-Man show up in some way.

The most interesting aspect of Venom is its relationship with Spider-Man, a metaphor for a vengeful spurned lover. The symbiote is literally a spurned lover who hates Spiderman for ridding himself of it. That's its purpose: to make Peter misreable for what he did.

Also how would you even introduce Venom or the symbiote without Spider-Man?

Blinglish
Blinglish - 10/19/2017, 8:56 AM
@pitbull76 - Does in the comics. Not every Venom story has Spider-Man in but the readers all know the connection.
JizzerTron
JizzerTron - 10/19/2017, 9:14 AM
@BlackBeltJones - BlackBeltJones - that's an excellent point. If spider-man's not in it they have to either change Venom's origin story around (hate when they do that) to exclude spidey or hint at spidey's involvement in the creation of the symbiote without having spidey in the actual movie. I still don't get why Sony doesn't want to just give rights to marvel for Venom. Maybe with losing their spidey property they want to salvage their spider-man franchise with Venom? I suppose it could open the door to more villain-driven films ie the now abandoned Sinister Six franchise?

This movie should not exist

Im guesing we will get more military type venom than actual Venom.

No Spider-Man...... no venom. With all the money homecoming made and sonys repeated past failure, I can't see why they are contributing to push through with this movie.
Highflyer
Highflyer - 10/19/2017, 8:42 AM
So... there's never been a venom comic where spidey doesn't appear?
GhostDog
GhostDog - 10/19/2017, 8:51 AM
@Highflyer - Ignoring the fact that the abomination that was Venom in Spiderman 3 never happened, this new film is a re-introduction of sorts. Its a new start and you'd figure a new initiation into the character would be one that involves why he exists and why he is and how he is....

And that's because of Spiderman. They've got to allude to or showcase him somehow if they want to be faithful to the concept of Venom in any way.
