GRAND THEFT AUTO VI Is Reportedly Rockstar's Next Game, But It's Still In The Very Early Stages

There's some good news and bad news when it comes to the future of the Grand Theft Auto franchise, as a new report claims that while it will be Rockstar's next game, we might still be waiting a while...

According to Kotaku, we could be waiting a while for the release of Grand Theft Auto VI. The game is said to still be in "early development," and this comes after months of conflicting stories about a possible reveal coming our way soon. Clearly, that's not going to be the case, and this definitely appears to be a title destined for the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

On the plus side, GTA VI is reportedly going to be Rockstar's next game despite claims that Bully 2 will fill the gap between Red Dead Redemption II and the next Grand Theft Auto game.

"The next GTA is still a ways away, so it'll be a while before we see whether the company's attempts to mitigate crunch are really successful, but in the last year Rockstar has made several quality-of-life improvements and replaced managers that staff described as toxic," trusted Kotaku journalist Jason Schreier said in regards to how the game fits into what's happening at Rockstar.

With COVID-19 also causing significant delays in the video game industry, we don't know when work will really start in earnest on GTA VI, and an official announcement could be unlikely in 2020.

With that in mind, it seems doubtful that we'll be able to play this one before 2022, but given Rockstar's stellar track record, chances are it will be worth the wait.

What do you guys hope to see in Grand Theft Auto VI?

Good for them for taking precautions to avoid more crunching

@tmp3 - id say its less that and more on focusing on content for gta online and now red dead online. Those are massive money makers for the company.

These games are unreal. They always blow my mind when they are released.

GTA V is 7 years old and still fun so I guess this makes sense.

@BlackBeltJones - They used to do a game a year before they made bank from GTA Online microtransactions.

Yesterday I read some fanboy's freakout about how slow Rockstar is: "Remember when Rockstar released a new GTA every other year?! What happened?!?"

If you compare GTA3 to Red Dead Redemption 2, in GTA3 an NPC is just some mindless null object with 36 polygons, a blurry texture map and one line they say over and over. In RDR2 every NPC has individually modeled hairs; they sweat and bleed realistically, they all have hours of dialogue options, detailed backstories, and interpersonal relationships with other NPCs. It probably takes Rockstar more man hours to design a single asset/character in a modern game than they spent designing the entire old game.

@santoanderson - I don't buy that explanation as fully the reason why they're slower to make games now. GTA 4 was insanely detailed as well and they still released many other games around that time. Don't you think it's a bit of a coincidence that they slow production down as soon as they discover microtransactions in 2013?

@TheJustinHammer - Well not all these games are expansions. They adopted the RAGE engine in 2007 and released a game every year up until 2013. Then they discovered that they could just milk GTA Online and a massive gap resulted.

Even Rockstar officials recognise that the gap was too long and they've said they won't let it happen again.

The next one should go semi international. A cartel story with mission based travel to south of the border would be cool.

I hope GTA Online progress transfers. Would hate to start all over again.

Hot take! not a big fan of GTA 5. Besides just dicking around in town ( which is fun) the rest of the game holds your hand like a baby to the point where it barely approximates being fun.

Early stages should see it around 2030.

Grand theft got a little overrated after 4 for me. It feels like once you played one you've played them all even with the different story.

Even playing the online game got stale after a week or so.

As much as I would love a return to 80's Vice City I don't see it happening.. too much money to be made off of the Online mode and if you set the game in a past era you are instantly limiting yourself to the vehicles of that era, and the tech (pop up smartphone, websites etc).
GTA Online has constantly brought in rip-offs of new supercars etc over the years to help keep content somewhat fresh... there isn't that same room for growth (and profit) in game set in a past era.

Mad that this is the first generation of consoles since the first GTA released to not get a new GTA released on it. Still, would rather they took their time and didn't treat their employees like shit so they could still deliver that expected quality.
