MARVEL'S AVENGERS: Crystal Dynamics Announces End Of Support For Disappointing Action-Adventure Game

The final content update for Marvel's Avengers is set to arrive in March. Following that, developer Crystal Dynamics will cease supporting the disappointing action-adventure video game.

We're in the endgame now for Marvel's Avengers. After a tumultuous two-and-a-half year run, developer Crystal Dynamics has announced it will cease support for the action-adventure video game.

Following Update 2.8 on March 31, 2023, no new content or features will be added to Marvel's Avengers. All official support for the game will end on September 30, 2023.

In the announcement post, the development team wrote:

We know this is disappointing news as everyone in our community has such a connection to these characters and their stories. We’re so, so grateful that you came on this adventure with us. Your excitement for Marvel’s Avengers – from your epic Photo Mode shots, to your threads theorizing who our next Heroes would be, to your Twitch streams – has played a large part in bringing this game to life.

We hope you continue to play and enjoy Marvel’s Avengers. We can’t thank you enough for your support and for being part of our super team.

The good news is that both single- and multi-player gameplay will still be available even after official support ends on September 30th. But for how long after is the question that Crystal Dynamics couldn't answer.

"The changes we are making to how the game functions will ensure as long a life as possible," the developer wrote. "However, after September 30, 2023 we can’t guarantee that we will be able to address issues that occur due to unforeseen circumstances."

The game will continue to run as is until March 31. Update 2.8 will contain the game's final balance changes and will also turn off the cosmetics Marketplace. Credits will no longer be purchasable and all remaining Credit balances will be converted into in-game resources to aid ongoing adventures.

Additionally, all of the game's Marketplace, Challenge Card, and Shipment cosmetic content will be made available to all players for free. As a thank you to the community, every single Outfit, Takedown, Emote, and Nameplate from the Marketplace, Challenge Cards, and Shipments will be free for all players who own the game.

We wanted to show all our players how much we’ve appreciated their support over the past few years. Gifting the full library of marketplace content is a way to thank our community by letting them experience the breadth of content in Marvel’s Avengers.

As for those who supported the game over the years by purchasing Credits or cosmetics, there are no plans to offer special refunds as a result of the Marketplace closure. Marvel's Avengers will remain available for purchase digitally until September 30, 2023 and at retailers while supplies last.

The once highly anticipated Marvel's Avengers launched in 2020 to mixed reviews and disappointing sales. Although the story and combat in the game was praised, numerous bugs and glitches marred the overall gameplay experience. A lack of content at launch and questionable microtransaction systems led to player frustration. In the years since launch, Crystal Dynamics has released multiple post-launch content updates and several additional playable characters, including Clint Barton, Kate Bishop, Spider-Man, Black Panther, Jane Foster, and Bucky Barnes.

It's definitely been a rocky road for Marvel's AvengersI think many of us were surprised to see it last this long given its commercial failure. It was fun to play in spurts but ultimately Marvel's Avengers -- a title with so much hype and promise -- will best be remembered as the game that could have been.

@TheShape9859 - I played this game but on PC when it was called Marvel Heroes 2015 and then 2016. It was my number one favorite online game ever! Played it everyday or at least logged-in everyday for a few years. It had the greatest people I've ever seen in the chat threads, the forums were a magical place.
For holidays like Christmas the community of like hundreds would gift each other in-game characters and other stuff, it was exactly like a pay-it-forward situation that inspired even more to buy random gifts and do giveaways.

The gameplay was divine, it never got old for me. I miss this game so much and still think about all the great times I had with it. Actually now that I think about it that was the forum I used to go every morning, where after that game I now come here to this site instead as my main morning reading.

Marvel needs to sh*t together on video games. This is unacceptable.

@TopBoy - Spider-Man and GotG were awesome. Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine will also very likely be awesome.

He'll, even Midnight Suns is awesome if you like strategy games.

@CorndogBurglar - Midnight Suns is amazing, as long as you can get past the fact that Wolverine is 6'6" in it for some reason (yet Sabretooth STILL calls him "runt" ")

@TopBoy - *Square Enix
This has little to do with Marvel as they don’t make the game just license the IP. There’s other studios like Insomniac and others doing the lords work and making great games. This is just Square Enix being money hungry and creatively bankrupt issue not an issue with the Marvel license in gaming

It felt like a first time game designer was given the biggest budget to make an Avengers game, but fundamentally has no idea how to make a game, so they hired a team of designers who did their best but were guided by idiots.

The most finely polished turd I've ever seen. Like they poured a whole box of glitter on diarrhea.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 1/21/2023, 2:03 PM
@TheVandalore - It wasn't an inexperienced development team at all. The problem is they had no experience in this genre. And like most Games as a Service models, they released an unfinished game full of bugs and problems. And the gameplay itself was boring. And the loot felt like it didn't matter....in a loot based game lol.

@LongMayHeReign - Didn't they only do Spider-man so far? while Spider-man was alot better than the Avengers, it was still tedious and is vastly overrated.

I'm one of the very few people who genuinely enjoyed playing this game, but it no doubt had a lot of flaws. The missions got repetitive & leveling up characters wound up feeling like a chore more than an enjoyable process. I pretty much haven't played at all since the Kate Bishop portion of the DLC.

It's a shame tho, I thought a lot of the gameplay was actually really fun & satisfying at times. Captain America was a blast to play with imo. Ended up with a pretty decent roster of playable characters too. Oh well, hopefully the next take on the Avengers in video games will be a little more of a well-rounded experience.

@ThouBear8 - I enjoyed it for what it was, too. Always thought I'd go back once a character I liked got added in, but they never got around to adding an interesting enough character. Loved my time as Cap, though.

@ThouBear8 - I enjoyed it to for a while, I agree it got repetitive and I to stopped before the new players got added but it was fun especially cap as u said. Personally I was hoping the for scarlet witch or strange to be added magic would of been fun

I thought the game was okay. Ms. Marvel was great in it and made me a fan of the character. Probably the best version of Modak we will will get. The game shouldn’t have been a live service game. It should have been a more straight forward game with diverse missions. Meaning the missions felt the same.

I always find it funny when developpers try to push this games as a service bullshit to suck more money out of people's pockets, only for the game to be considered trash BECAUSE of said GAAS model. It feels like whacking a thief's hand away from your stuff.

I feel like there was a good game hidden somewhere in there. I liked Black Widow's gameplay, her red staff attacks were pretty efficient. But Iron Man flies as slow as a snail, Thor's hammer doesn't feel impactful or satisfying, despite being developed by the same person (?) who did the Leviathan Axe in GOW. Also, rampaging the battlefield as the Hulk while your allies are standing right next to you, not minding the AOE attacks, clipping through you and pretty much pretending you don't exist turned me off.

At least the Spider-Man games and GOTG are top notch !

With all the Marvel history they could have pulled from it's a damn shame this didn't turnout better. It just got repetitive quick.

So to say “Thank you” to their fans, they’re making all the content that they grinded or paid for free to everyone just now hopping on to the game. Makes sense

Disappointing repetitive game that quickly became boring and it had some of the worst Marvel costume designs.

I'll probably spin it up somewhere in April to go through the things I've missed or that have been added since I last played it. Expect to be done quickly though.

Anyway, surprised this game held out as long as it did.

Re-installed this game to try out Might Thor awhile back. tired her. then uninstalled the game. The Black Panther DLC was actually good, so i thought the game was headed in a good direction....I was wrong...
Kinda Crazy how I've already logged more hours into Midnight Suns than I did in Avengers....also, DLC for Midnight Suns is coming out next week, while you always had to wait forever for Avengers stuff

The game sucked. Now it is dying.

Good riddance.

Marvel needs to be a lot more picky next time they want to get in bed with a game developer.

Just because the game developer guy in the windowless van offers you a lot of candy, a fun ride, and a free rectal exam does NOT mean you should just jump right in.

This was DOA from the first gameplay reveal. Whoever thought taking the Tomb Raider studio (game I like quite a bit) known for critically acclaimed story driven single player games and the Avengers IP and then having them make a online multiplayer GAAS game was a good idea should be fired. The only time GAAS works is with mmo’s or free to play games. This was an obvious cash grab from out of touch executives
