Role Playing Games: Marvel Super Heroes RPG to be reborn under Margaret Weis Productions

It's been years since a Marvel role playing game was printed...

Marvel Super Heroes Advanced RPG was published by TSR in the mid 1980's, and since that time thousands have dedicated themselves to playing it and forming groups around it. The game is easy to learn, and has a simple elegance that fits well the genre of superheroes. It's easily one of the best superhero games ever created.

Unfortunately, it's also considered a "dead" game from a publishing perspective, since no new material is being published for it other than the various fan created literature- of which there is admittedly a lot of on-line. That said, there's no way to go out to the store and pick up new source material for the current Marvel Universe as we now know it.

Here's where Margaret Weis Productions comes in. They've picked the license back up from Marvel, and are shipping a new version of this game to the masses. I've already ordered my copy from Amazon, but it will hit shelves soon if not already. Once again we have new blood, new adventures, and a new system to test and learn.

Which brings me to my next point. It's a new system. VERY different than the old FASERIP system we all know from the classic Advanced MSH set. At least from previews on their website. Will it be as simple to use? Will it be too crunchy, too squishy, or just right? I haven't received my copy yet, so I can't make that determination.

What I can say is that I am very loyal to the classic MSH, and know it like the back of my hand. My old friend and I used to play this game for hours and hours and we both feel the same way. That said, we're excited to see the newest incarnation, and can't wait to receive our copies. It's a new generation of gaming, and we still have our old rules too so we can enjoy that game as well. I see this as a win-win situation for all Marvel RPG fans.

In that way, I'm already sold on its success. Play hard, fans!

We obviously are great fans here of the classic Marvel Superhero RPG Advanced set (FASERIP system) but I've heard some positive things about the game. It seems the gripes against it are mostly centered around lack of development on the part of making your own character instead of playing one already made, also it's not crunchy enough for people who are used to more of the "Clobberin' Time!" kind of action in the earlier version. The positives though are it's very story based, and allows for a different kind of play, more plot driven and cooperative. I'm also interested in the talk about milestones. I have felt that's one thing that MSH rpg missed that D&D had- level ups. It gives a character a kind of ritual goal to reach toward, instead of little by little increasing powers and adding talents or abilities or stunts etc. At the very least we could take what it does well and incorporate it into the game we already love.

Thanks for letting us know about this. Not sure I want to start on a NEW system; I did (and still do) enjoy FASERIP. Love the DC Megs Blood of Heroes "exponential" system, too. Well, at least someone is bringing back A superhero RPG. That's a good sign, I think!

Oh, and MSH RPG, I don't know if you've been here, but it's one of the BEST MSH RPG forums I've been to. http://www.classicmarvelforever.com/phorum/list.php?3
