TOMB RAIDER: New Report Details How MGM Lost Movie Rights After Failing To Start Production On Sequel

MGM losing the movie rights to the Tomb Raider franchise left Hollywood pundits speechless, but a new report sheds some light on what went wrong, and yes, it involves "creative differences." Check it out!

When it was revealed that MGM had somehow managed to lose the rights to the Tomb Raider franchise, Hollywood insiders were left perplexed. How could such a major studio let this happen?

That's a question people have been asking ever since we learned that the studio failed to start production on the sequel in time, prompting a bidding war among studios looking to reboot the franchise. Amazon recently acquired MGM and could do a lot with Tomb Raider, but The Wrap (via ActioNewz.com) has now shared more details on where it all went wrong.

It sounds like the larger production budget needed for writer and director Misha Green's planned take on Lara Croft proved particularly problematic, while there were also disagreements between the filmmaker and star Alicia Vikander. This caused delays, and somehow, MGM ended up missing that May 1 date to start production on the follow-up to the 2018 reboot.

Vikander and Green were in talks about the actor's issues with the script when that deadline came and went, but it was too late. MGM asked game developer Square Enix for more time, "but their patience had run out." That's understandable, to be fair!

Interestingly, it sounds like Ben Wheatley's vision for Tomb Raider was a lot more of a traditional action movie, though it's unclear why that version never came to fruition beyond possible creative differences. Green ultimately wanted to make a more ambitious (and thereby more expensive) movie, and that's where the problems began.

The trade reiterates previous reports that Vikander won't reprise the role, but notes that Netflix, Warner Bros. and Amazon are among the parties now interested in acquiring these film rights.

With that in mind, the Tomb Raider franchise could be destined for streaming. We'd assume it would be a movie, but there's no denying that Lara's story would also work well on television (there's currently an animated series in the works for Netflix).

Hopefully, we'll have more details to share with you soon. Angelina Jolie previously played Lara Croft, so it will be interesting to see if we get an established star or a relative newcomer in the role.

I think Tomb Raider could work really well on Amazon as an 8 episode season series.

Why did they hire Green if the studio & Vikander weren't on board her more expensive vision?

Just hope to Hell WB doesn't get their hands on this property.
It literally has the potential to be a modern Raiders of the Lost Ark if done right!

Never forget, Lovecraft Country was supposedly cancelled due to Green's creation of a toxic work environment, according to many writers from the show. If true, wouldn’t be surprised if she was difficult here as well. But who knows.

These types of projects where the lead actor is basically a producer, should have them have a hand in picking the director/writer. Not to say you can’t disagree with someone you hand pick, but I think in choosing that person there’s a collective understanding that the project spearhead (that actor) really wanted you. MGM chose Green, not Vikander. Tomb Raider seemed to be Vikander’s baby.

Haven’t ever heard good things about Greene. Lovecraft had its moments but was ultimately pretty disappointing.

I hope Amazon gets the rights. Doing an origin story for Lara Croft as a series would be cool.

I would also be down for a great action/adventure movie about a seasoned Lara Croft.

@AmazingFILMporg - The trainwreck continues.
This article contains some of the same allegations, but again, ALLEGEDLY, Miller is now constantly wearing "body armor" (a bulletproof vest I assume) and is armed at all times when in public and may have "lost touch with reality".

@AmazingFILMporg - I mentioned this in another article. But if WB doesn't cancel The Flash as well they are going to face backlash from Christians, the LGBTQ community, African American rights groups, and Anti-Gun groups. This will be the first time all these groups will unify against a common enemy. Ezra is using the LGBTQ community to evade judgement and play the victim while grooming and abusing a child and using weapons and drugs to do so. WB cancelled a DC film with a Black actress and Michael Keaton and is replacing Keaton with Affleck again but won't cancel The Flash that has a known Sexual Predator and child groomer. They also fired Johnny Depp immediately due to accusations but when they turned out false they played stupid.

Exactly and don't forget choking a woman on camera😐....

This is why I can't take this new CEO seriously.

Building a universe on a foundation of lies, abuse, grooming and violence.

If you miss a known cutoff time and therefore lose the rights to the property, maybe you weren't interested that much with the property to begin with.

Shame this has went the way it has because I actually enjoyed the 2018 version with Vikander. Thought she was a better choice & came across more like Lara than Jolie.

Oh well, back to square one & see where we can go with a new lead (Will we ever get to a trilogy or beyond?).

Personally I'd hope the new studio would just keep Vikander & get a new director to pick up from where Green left off.

I kinda hope Netflix get's the rights so they make a movie with Hayley Atwell that fits their upcoming anime continuity. And while they're at it, get Atwell to voice the upcoming older Lara game as well

lets be honest..... the last movie was massively forgettable.

hopefully a new studio can give it some life.
