Here is what was reported about the adaptaion, and its wanted director:
While some studios are content to keep making movies about board games, Universal Pictures is looking to the future with an adaptation of the 1979 arcade game, Asteroids. Perhaps hoping to recreate the magic and box office receipts of the director's 1996 alien-explosion-extravaganza, the studio has reached out to Roland Emmerich to direct the upcoming film.
The original game saw players take control of a tiny triangle, which they then spun around to shoot incoming asteroids and alien ships. The film adaptation is said to take place in a future where humans live on colonies in an asteroid belt, with alien neighbors. Alien-human relations take a turn for the worse, and most likely result in some humans spinning around shooting at and exploding both asteroids and aliens alike.
Honestly, video game adaptations aren't exactly known for being the best films out there. Although this adaptation would be in good hands if Roland accepted. But, that will just have to be seen first.
Good Day Peeps!
