David Haddad, head of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, recently spoke to Variety about the studios' Harry Potter game, Hogwarts Legacy selling over 22 million copies by the end of 2023.
Haddad began the interview by highlighting the success of the Harry Potter game, stating, "It brought Harry Potter to life in a new way for gamers where they could be themselves in this world, in this story. And that’s what the team at Avalanche set out to do when they were developing the game and I think that’s really why it resonated so well and remains the best-selling game of the year in the entire industry worldwide. That’s a position that typically is held by one of these incumbent’s sequel games and we’re so proud that we’ve been able to break into the top ranks."
However, it was later confirmed that in addition to Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, MultiVersus and a single-player action Wonder Woman game from Monolith, WB Games is also working on tie-in video games for James Gunn and Peter Safran's DCU.
Haddad stated, "A very consistent message coming from the executive layer of Warner Bros. Discovery is the importance of franchises. There’s a unique and important role games have in keeping our franchises relevant, resonant and exciting because there’s plenty of fans and plenty of people consuming content where games are their starting point, it’s their preferred form of content.”
This is the first indication from Warner Bros.' video game division that they support Gunn's grandiose plans to build a cinematic world that spans all mediums.
When first unveiling the Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters slate, Gunn stated, "What we're doing with the DCU is we're having animation tied directly into live action. Television, movies and games all intertwine within the same universe. We're going to cast actors that are going to be able to play the characters in this, as well as in other things, some of which we've already cast."
Haddad understandably declined to get into specifics on what DCU video games are presently in development, but given the diversified Chapter 1 slate, there are clearly a lot of possibilities.
Could there be a tie-in Superman: Legacy game secretly in development that will see the cast reprise their roles? A third-person Peacemaker shooter with John Cena providing the voice and motion capture would also draw a lot of interest from gamers and comic book readers, alike.
Fans wasted no time posing questions to Gunn on social media, where he's already chimed in.
Stay tuned to CBM for future updates as Gunn is likely to start receiving and responding to a lot more video game-related questions on social media.
