MARVEL'S MIDNIGHT SUNS: First Gameplay Trailer Reveals A Very Different Take On Earth's Mightiest Heroes

Nearly 10 minutes of gameplay footage has been revealed for Marvel's Midnight Suns, and it definitely looks like XCOM developer Firaxis Games has nailed this unique new take on the Marvel Universe...

Firaxis Games, the team behind the XCOM and Civilization franchises, will release Marvel's Midnight Suns next year. Featuring tactical, turn-based gameplay, the game will feature a new combat system and a story mode that will see players interact with other heroes from the Marvel Universe.

Between missions, you'll head to The Abbey. There, you can explore your surroundings in third-person, talking to your fellow superheroes through extensive dialogue trees and choosing who to add to your team. Teammates include Blade, Doctor Strange, Captain America, Iron Man, Captain Marvel, Magik, Ghost Rider, Wolverine, Captain Marvel, and Nico Minoru (with more to be revealed).

That looks pretty badass, right? While the gameplay mechanic is unlikely to appeal to anyone who isn't into games with playing card/deck-based combat, it's fair to say it still has some potential.

Hopefully, more will be revealed soon, but this does actually look better than Marvel's Avengers!

"The world as we know it is changed forever when Hydra, through a procedure of magic and science, manages to revive Lilith, Mother of Demons," reads the official synopsis for Midnight Suns"In an effort to prevent Lilith from spreading her armies across the world, destroying everything in her path, The Avengers enlist the Midnight Suns to assist in their battle. This team of supernaturally powered heroes will need to work with the likes of Captain America, Iron-Man and Captain Marvel if they want to stop Lilith from resurrected Chthon, her all-powerful master."

Marvel's Midnight Suns is set to be released on March 2022 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. Stay tuned to GameFragger.com for additional updates!

Why are the graphics so appalling? This looks like a mobile game!

WTF is this shit?!?! The trailer looked insane. I was hoping for a slick 3rd person team up game in the vain of X-Men Legends, not this turn based RPG snorefest! Seriously, WTF?!?!

@Tasmaniac - EXACTLY! They dropped the ball on this one

Why do I need to navigate to another site just to watch a video? Why not post the video in the article?

@Arthorious - he wrote an article on another site. Basically he wants double the clicks for double profit

I'm not so sure about this game's chances, tbh. Like, what audience does this have, really? I like the story and setting a lot, I'm more than fine with the graphics, and I generally love turn based games. Still I'm turned off by the weird card based system and the prospect of microtransactions in a full price singleplayer game.

I was initially quite hyped about this. Now, not so much. 😕

@Kyos - Yeah, if this was a ftp mobile game alongside their other mobile Avengers games, I'd get it. But what console gamer would want to spend $60 for this?

What kind abomination is this?
Tactical turn based TPS RPG mobile game??
And look better than the Avengers?

So I guess there's no XCom fans here? This looks awesome. But it is a niche genre.

@CorndogBurglar - I'm actually in the middle of a campaign now in Xcom: Enemy Unknown and been playing it the last couple of weeks lol.

@CorndogBurglar - I am a huge XCOM fan, but I really need to see more of this new combat system. Random powers, represented by cards? So far it looks very unintuitive and immersion breaking to me.

@Kyos - I admit, the card thing is a little weird. Not being able to do certain attacks because you didn't get a specific card dealt feels a little too random.

@CorndogBurglar - X-Com 2 is in my top 20 best games of all time, and yeah Metroid Prime and Halo Reach are there.

Tactical RPGs aren’t really my thing, so I’ll pass. Cool cinematics though.

@Reeds2Much - This is gold!!!! My life in XCOM so many times!!! I am looking foward to giving this game a try. Deck Builder / XCOM / MARVEL? I'M in!

People are legit disappointed that the XCOM developers made a turn-based strategy game. It’s like being disappointed FromSoftware made a difficult game.

If you’re let down by this it’s your own fault.

The cinematic stuff looks cool and I'm digging the story, but that gameplay looks boring as balls.

I'm not trying to change anybody's mind with this post. I think if you don't like what you see, we aren't going to change your mind.

That said, deck building meets marvel meets xcom? The potential here is insane for this gamer. I'm in! When this game releases let's get some multiplayer going! Woot!

DC has video games locked down. It’s like they have a deal with marvel on what to be great at.

Honestly the Lilith design is commendable. It’s an inspired way to make this live action in a realistic and alien looking way:
