WONDER WOMAN 1984 Director Patty Jenkins Explains Why The Sequel Has Two Villains

Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins has addressed her decision to include two villains in the sequel, with Pedro Pascal's shady businessman Maxwell Lord and Kristen Wiig's animalistic Cheetah!

Wonder Woman focused on one main villain, Ares, and two supporting baddies in Ludendorff and Dr. Maru. Patty Jenkins' sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, will include two big bads with Maxwell Lord and Dr. Barbara Minerva/Cheetah, villains who could easily have been saved for separate movies.

Asked by Total Film to explain her decision to pit Diana Prince against two of her most fearsome comic book foes, Jenkins explained that the story she wants to tell required both villains.

"It turned out that the story was the thing that gave birth to the need for both," she explains, detailing her thought process for adapting the character. "It wasn't that I thought I needed both. Cheetah was the villain that we were focused on having in this movie, but then Max Lord, throughout the history of Wonder Woman comics -- he serves a very mechanical purpose, often."

There are many fans who may have been happier with Maxwell Lord receiving 100% of the spotlight, but it's sounding like he'll be in Wonder Woman 1984 to help set the stage for Cheetah's emergence.

Scheduled for release this August after being hit by a two-month delay thanks to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, plans for both characters in Wonder Woman 1984 should soon become clearer.

I think it's a great idea. Cheetah always felt like a villain that Wonder Woman could dispatch pretty easily physically, and it would probably be hard to stretch a Lord story out to theatrical length on its own (with appropriate action). But together, they're a really great complement. Just enough that together they could potentially be overwhelming to Diana.

The story has to be good and make sense, of course, but the fundamentals make total sense to me.

I take it you weren't a fan of the JL Mortal script, haha

@tmp3 - Hehe, no I'm really not, but even that had OMAC and Talia al Ghul to spice it up.

But now that you're pressing me, I could imagine Lord somehow manipulating the other Amazons to open their island up to the world of Man, and getting a whole movie out of it. A lot of Diana-on-Amazon action as she tries to return from exile or something.

@Deku - Dude!!! I thought the same thing. The leaked plot sounded terrible, and the entire Cheetah for 2 mins is just plain wrong. Often those can be wrong but I am having serious reservations...

@Deku - I am definitely getting Joel Schumacher vibes.

But I felt the same watching Aquaman and people liked that. Hopefully they'll like this, too. I guess.

Because one villain might lead to a consistent and coherent storyline. Can’t have that.

She can’t very well fight maxwell lord without making it wicked stupid.I think it’s pretty obvious why

MLIV is fine but they're going to have to ignore some of his best stories that involve the JL and JLI. I would rather them have used Dr Psycho instead. It'll be hard to do now seeing they have very similar power sets. That would be redundant and boring.

I'm also curious if WW gets to snap his neck after the Zod backlash.

Its literally like the last one with Poison and the general I forgot his name.
Poison was "misunderstood" somehow cuz she has a scar on her face, am pretty sure that would a be similar case with cheetah, Wonder woman won't defeat her ans will go forward to fight the guy with the suit instead.

Movie maths.

2 x half arsed villains (H) + convenient shared motivation (C) + audience goodwill from previous solid film (G) = revenue + death of franchise+end of director’s career

2H+C+G=$+💀+💩

DC Executives: “Eh, it’s worth it. We’ll get our cut and retire”.

@Tasmaniac - Food math: Dogs come in jars of 8, but buns come in packs of 6, so...

3 jars + 4 packs = perfect Dog:Bun ratio.

I'm like a culinary Einstien.

@GwenLantern - Genius.

It’s much easier in Australia though: Loaf of bread + packet of cheap snags = enough bread left over for Vegemite on toast the next morning. Provided the kids don’t give the leftovers to the dog sniffing around the barbie.
