WONDER WOMAN 1984: First Details On Cheetah's Villainous Arc In The Sequel Revealed

Yesterday, Warner Bros. revealed the first official images from Wonder Woman 1984 and now a new report sheds some light on what exactly we should expect from Kristen Wiig's Cheetah in the upcoming sequel.

Wonder Woman's rogues' gallery may not be as familiar as Batman's or Spider-Man's but perhaps her most iconic foe is Cheetah. A number of characters have held the mantle over the years but there's a very strong chance that we'll see Dr. Barbara Ann Minerva in Wonder Woman 1984, an archaeologist who sold her soul in exchange for supernatural abilities. However, things quickly went wrong for her!

Now, Vulture editor Kyle Buchanan has shed some light on Cheetah's story arc in the sequel and it sounds like the movie will be following the comic books because the character will start off as Diana Prince's ally before taking a villainous turn and seemingly losing control of her new cat-like abilities.

With that in mind, it appears as if Patty Jenkins has been inspired by Greg Rucka's recent Wonder Woman run as that portrayed Cheetah's downfall as being somewhat tragic. This no doubt means we can expect a vast improvement over Ares, a villain who drew the ire of critics despite the rest of Wonder Woman being well-received. What do you guys think of these latest details about the film?

I like where this sounds to be going. A friendship gone bad, turning into one of the most brutal and deadly antagonists in the Wonder Woman rogues gallery.

I wonder if 'Magic Hour' hints to the introduction of Circe and it is just not announced yet?

I adored the first Wonder Woman to no measure, but I do admit that it’s antagonists were lacking depth so I’m happy to hear that we’ll see Cheetah as a three-dimensional character.

I’m also very interested in Wiig’s casting, it’s not who I would ever have imagined but comedians are often incredibly adept at dramatic roles in a way that is rarely true for the reverse.

@FromACertainPOV - I've thought the same thing with Wiig. I'm keeping faith with Patty Jenkins as even after all the fake news that came out to disrupt Wonder Woman (including the 'I'm a former WB employee and we all know this is a train wreck' letter leading to a lot of news) she still delivered a massive hit. Good on her!

Nothing like a good old-fashioned cat fight.

Those set photos have got me thinking...

Does Barbara somehow end up with AIDS trying to emulate Wonder Woman, and then she becomes the Cheetah as a desperate attempt to heal herself from it, which of course comes at the cost of becoming a flesh eating beast?

So she goes from fighting Ares...to Cheetah, how does that work? Her power level at the end of the first film was near Superman level now she fights a cat lady?

So she’s going to be Cheetah in name only, right? Like, she’s going to use the name but not look anything like the character? Or maybe she’ll wear a cheetah print dress at one point and make a snarky comment about how bad the look is...

@Stinkor1 - Do you not know what the character of Cheetah is like in the comics?

@noahthegrand - not really. Lol. Just basing her off how she looks in the pictures of her where she’s looks like Cheetara

I just have the concern that Kristen Wiig was cast so that they could essentially have the Etta Candy type comedic role as the friend and then make her the villain to some varying level of tragedy... and while that could work, it seems like it could inherently have pitfalls trying to go from goofy to threatening as well.

Others seem to be more directly imagining a “Winter Soldier” type drama all the way through. We’ll see.
