WONDER WOMAN 1984 Gets A New Release Date As Warner Bros. Commits To Theatrical Debut

With COVID-19 keeping theater doors closed for the foreseeable future, Warner Bros. has decided to postpone Wonder Woman 1984, and the sequel now has a new release date. Hit the jump for details...

The first half of 2020 has approximately zero superhero movies for us to look forward to, as Warner Bros. has announced that Wonder Woman 1984 will now be released on August 14th.

The DC Comics adaptation was originally set to be released last November before being pushed back to June 5th, and this latest delay was inevitable given what's happening in the world.

While there were rumblings last week that Warner Bros. was considering a Digital release for Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman sequel, that appears to be an idea which is no longer on the table (for the time being, at least). Whether that will change largely hinges on the chances of theaters being open again by the time August rolls around.

"When we greenlit 'Wonder Woman 1984,' it was with every intention to be viewed on the big screen and are excited to announce that Warner Bros. Pictures will be bringing the film to theatres on Aug. 14," Toby Emmerich, Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman, said in a statement today. "We hope the world will be in a safer and healthier place by then."

Variety notes that the studio believes August is a realistic release date because theaters should be open by then (after a three-month lockdown in China, they've started re-opening there).

Nothing is certain, though, and we don't know what's going to happen next, especially with COVID-19 cases rising dramatically on a daily basis in the US. With any luck, the world will be a brighter place by the summer, and we'll all be able to check out Wonder Woman 1984 on the big screen.

If not, here's hoping Digital is still an option...

@ElJefe - Yeah we can can wait another 2 months, although geese it only 3 months away from the original release date. This could have been avoided if they hadn't moved it

That quote from Emmerich makes me think some WB execs/shareholders got pretty unhappy with those rumors of it going straight to streaming. Good thing they moved it before spending more on advertising.

No biggie. Not watching this in the theater anyway. No amount of fake hype or media blitzing could ever get me to pretend this franchise and actress isn't straight trash. What a joke.

@Lilmanz - Whatever Marvel fanboy, be happy with your lead heroine who constantly shit talks fans. While us DC fans will enjoy our lead heroine who supports inclusion and the fact that these films can appeal to everyone

@Lilmanz - I can admit when Marvel beats DC, obviously right now Marvel is kicking DC's ass in the live action film department, but that doesn't mean DC never manages to do something better than the Marvel counterpart. Like compare Wonder Woman or Aquaman to the first Thor movie. The first Thor movie feels more like a tv pilot than a movie

Lilmanz - 3/24/2020, 12:40 PM
@dracula - lmao Aquaman was a cluster[frick] and Wonder Woman was straight trash. You've crushed all of your credibility in one swoop.

@Lilmanz - You know you are full of shit when thats all you can say. How about actually explaining your opinion. Cause yeah Marvel doesn't have a perfect track record either. Like geese the only Thor movie people actually think lives up to the marvel standard is Thor Ragnarok and they had to throw out the Thor mythos and give us a Flash Gordon style movie, I enjoy it, but geese at least Wonder Woman and Aquman give us Wonder Woman and Aquaman movies, not Flash Gordon/planet hulk

Watch Marvel move Widow to August and then Warner Bros moving Wonder Woman again

@WakandanQueen - I think each Marvel film just moves up one to the next, since I'd be surprised if Shang Chi gets done in time with Aus going full lock-down

WakandanQueen - 3/24/2020, 11:57 AM
@tmp3 - I was thinking since Eternals is done they'd release it this year? And then just release 3 films in 2020 if they can't release one in February.
