It sounds like Gal Gadot will be staying on as Diana in the new DCU, as Wonder Woman 3 is reportedly still being developed by DC Studios.
The actress was all set to reprise the role of Diana for a third film with WW84 director Patty Jenkins back at the helm, but we had been led to believe that the movie was shelved when James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as co-heads of the recently implemented DC Studios.
However, while speaking to ComicBook.com about her new Netflix action movie Heart of Stone, Gadot appeared to confirm that she will return as the iconic Amazonian hero in the DCU.
"I love portraying Wonder Woman," Gadot told the site. "It's so close to and dear to my heart. From what I heard from James and from Peter is that we're gonna develop a Wonder Woman 3 together."
It's worth noting that Gunn never actually stated that Gadot was "done" as Diana, but Gadot did indicate that she was ready to move on from the role in a recent interview.
"To me, starting and developing stories that I'm passionate about is an incredible thing. The fact that I don't have to sit still at home and just wait for the next offer is something that makes me feel empowered. I enjoy doing it, it keeps me alive," said Gadot. "I'm not only going to do my own projects, I'm going to work as an actress-for-hire still. But the fact that I can go ahead and tell the stories that I'm passionate about – from ideas that I conceived, or from ideas that I find fascinating from people that want to partner with us – it's an incredible thing."
As far as we know, there are no current plans for Wonder Woman in the first chapter of the DCU slate, "Gods and Monsters," but a Max TV series titled Paradise Lost is in development that will focus on “a Game of Thrones-type story about Themyscira.”
We assumed this show would lay the groundwork for a new take on the character to be introduced down the line, but it seems Gadot will be staying put!
What do you make of this update? Would you be happy if Gadot remained on board as Wonder Woman in the DCU, or were you looking forward to a new actress taking on the role?
